OK so they were soundly beaten in NBA Finals last season . And perhaps that was a good thing for Phil Jackson's team. If nothing else they'll use it as a learning process rather than thinking that they were entitled to winning it all before they'd even set foot on the court. Such was the thinking of those within the city of Angels. The Los Angeles Lakers as a franchise has a great deal going for it. And when they're in the public eye , especially amongst the fans of the NBA it bodes well for the sport in general. And now with their greatest rival the Boston Celtics back to the fore it creates an even greater excitement amongst both fan bases as well as the rest of the NBA.

They were soundly beaten by a team in the Boston Celtics that took advantage of the naivete' shown by a team that never fully acquitted itself well enough on the court when it really counted. In Kobe Bryant they have a supremely gifted player. And in many peoples' eyes he is perhaps the best player of his generation. There may well be naysayers amongst us but the facts don't lie when it comes to his abilities. Bryant is in rarified air when they speak about him as a player as he's mentioned amongst the greats of the game . The comparisons between he and Jordan set the stakes and to an extent they may well be justified. But I for one feel that we can only fully make the judgement once Bryant has left the game for good. And then we can soundly make those assessments.

Center Andrew Bynum of the Los Angeles Lakers gives an interview with a member of the local press during the team's media day in late September . picture appears courtesy of nbae/getty images/ Wendi Kaminski ............................
This upcoming season we'll see whether or not the return of Andrew Bynum will add that much needed spark that seemed to be missing from the team. Were it not for his untimely loss in the regular season due to injury perhaps the outcome of the Finals might well have been different. But that can be debated by others, as what happened in the past can't be changed as the facts speak for themselves. Over the course of the series there was much to find intriguing and enthralling by this team. Bryant showed why he's integral to the success of the team but it can be said without the presence of Bynum the Lakers' fate was sealed before the Finals themselves started. The loss of the series in six games (4-2) was heart rendering for the Lakers as well as their ever resourceful fans. But nowhere was it more profound than with Kobe Bryant himself. If anything he'll be out to make amends for the loss. And if the Olympics and the success attained there is anything to go by then his appetite for the upcoming season will be quenched.

In knowing that Jackson has now a fully fit Bynum and a roster of young players and seasoned veteran players that added desire is there for Bryant and the franchise to succeed. If nothing else he'll want to prove to those out there that he can win a championship without the aid of Shaquille O'Neal. The latter of whom it can be said after his triumph with the Miami Heat hasn't looked the same since. Needless to say that his form with the Phoenix Suns left a great deal to be desired. And while much has been made of the relationship between the two. It has been Bryant whose shown maturity whilst his former teammate has sunk to the depths of juvenlile behavior and asinine rants deriding his former teammate.

In what'll no doubt be a highly contested NBA Western Conference the Lakers are seen as the presumptive favorites to win the conference and return to the NBA Finals. But therein lies the rub we've seen the rise of the New Orleans Hornets under the leadership of point guard Chris Paul. And at the same time the Portland Trailblazers have all of a sudden become a team that has to be feared along to with the Houston Rockets . The latter two teams for which a fully fit Greg Oden will add bite offensively upfront and defensively for the Trailblazers. Whilst the acquisition of Ron Artest by the Rockets from the Sacramento Kings makes them more of a well balanced team. And with that triumvirate of McGrady , Yao Ming and Artest you'd be somewhat of a fool to underestimate their chances at this juncture.

The rest of the conference itself is still filled with the same perennial stalwarts such as the San Antonio Spurs , Phoenix Suns and Dallas Mavericks. Though it can be said with an aging team that in last year's conference finals' loss to the Lakers, the Spurs looked but anything like a former four time champion of the NBA. It's plain to see that if they're to get back to those lofty heights then the presence and leadership of Tim Duncan has to be complemented by even greater contributions from his teammates Manu Ginobili and Tony Parker. The fact of the matter is that the Spurs as a team may well be on the downside of what has been a fabulous run. But again the caveat being that one would be fools to overlook them as their inate experience has been something that they've always counted on. And with a coach such as Greg Popovich it's hard not to take them seriously as a contender. The Phoenix Suns and Dallas Mavericks are great during the regular season but if there's anything that we can be assured of during the postseason is that they're bound to self implode . It'd appear that they seem to abandon what got them to where they are, seeking something else that they're unable to obtain. It may well be the lack of leadership on both teams or the mere fact that the coaching when it really counts just doesn't seem to be there.

In Phil Jackson as a coach what he achieved last season with the team was outstanding. The nine time NBA champion as a coach seeks an unprecedented tenth championship. Having equalled Red Auerbach's tally of nine, in surpassing it. It would put to rest all the talk as to who is the greatest coach that the NBA has seen or had in terms of success. The six championships with the Jordan led Chicago Bulls speak for themselves. And add to that a further three consecutive with the Lakers does speak volumes for the man as a coach. But this season isn't just about Jackson as a coach and those achievements. It's about the franchise and their intentions to redeem themselves after last season's loss. Much will be expected and much has to be achieved if they're to get back to the Finals and avenge that series' loss. The players are on a mission to prove to many that they're capable of returning to the Finals.

Always the focus and center of attention Kobe Bryant addresses the press at the team's media day. picture appears courtesy of nbae/getty images/ Wendi Kaminski ...........
Bryant's demeanor and maturity will go a long way in guiding this team . His presence and leadership all assures us of that. And if anything the lesson learnt during the Olympics where he stood on the podium accepting team gold for his country won't be lost on him. He's embraced it and will offer points and counterpoints on what it's like to triumph when adversity stares back at you. If he provides them with that sort of a lesson and they respond in kind . Then there's no reason to believe why it is they can't return to the Finals and be triumphant. The talk is that with the Eastern Conference's win in the NBA Finals the confidence of the teams there will be all the more heightened. But there's still much to suggest that in the Western Conference the teams there haven't foresaken all and that the loss is but a small respite. The Los Angeles Lakers if anything are out to prove that to be a fact.

Well all isn't right in Jerry Jones' world at present. He threw his lot in with the hope that Adam 'Pacman' Jones could bring some semblance of respectability to the Dallas Cowboys. With the loss of Terrence Newman and Jones' arrival in Big D it was felt that this team could prove to be competitive within the NFC and the league as a whole.

Roy Williams (l) now of the Dallas Cowboys is seen here playing for the Detroit Lions. Williams was traded from the Lions to the Cowboys for a 1st 3rd and 5th round draft pick. Their standing within the ever competitive NFC East where teams such as the Cowboys , Philadelphia Eagles , New York Giants and Washington Redskins reside takes a toll on the teams during the regular season. And any ambitions that the teams may well have to postseason play has to manifest itself in they're having to raise the level of their play to even greater heights. With the travails and woes of the Cowboys comes the ever growing expectations of team that hasn't won playoff game in over a decade .

For Jerry Jones and this latest incident concerning the uneven nature and temperament of his cornerback Adam Jones would appear to be one of wishful thinking to begin with in the first place. Thinking that he could bring out the best in a player who in his previous place of employ with the Tennessee Titans was about as troublesome as one could imagine. The endless run ins with law enforcement and the fact that he'd outstayed his welcome with the Titans and his teammates would suggest that Pacman's problems were far from being solved. In steps Cowboys' owner Jerry Jones in thinking that he could make Jones his latest social pet project of redemption. It's an art form at its very best if proven successful. We've some semblance of succes with defensive tackle Tank Johnson. Who if anything so far has proven himself to be a reliable and resourceful addition to the Cowboys' defensive line.
Cowboys' quarterback Tony Romo fumbles the ball after he's hit by the Cardinals' Chike Okeafor as his teammate Darnell Dockett lays in wait for the loose ball. picture appears courtesy of ap/photos/ Ross D. Franklin .......................
And while no one it would appear wishes to question Jones' belief that he seeks to resume the lost souls of the NFL. It's becoming abundantly clear that this could well be leading to the internal friction within the franchise. With Jones' suspension for an alcohol related incident where he and a bodyguard were involved in a fracas where punches were exchanged between the two. Jerry Jones' belief that he could resurrect Pacman's career and bring him back to where he'd be a defensive presence on this roster had yet to materialize. If anything it was off field demeanor and actions that were being questioned rather than his on the field abilities. What certainly didn't help also were the losses suffered by the team to the Washington Redskins and Arizona Cardinals respectively. Sitting at 4-2 within the NFC East and (1-1) within the division , the team now finds itself sitting behind the Washington Redskins and New York Giants.
Cowboys' wide receiver Terrell Owens speaks with the press outside the locker room at the Dallas Cowboys' training facility in Irving, Texas. picture appears courtesy of ap/photo/Tony Gutierrez .....
Adam Jones' loss may well be one thing but it has been the loss of Pro Bowl quarterback Tony Romo . That may well be the greatest threat to the franchise . Having broken the little finger on his throwing hand in Sunday's game against the Cardinals. His loss to the team from anywhere from four to six weeks as is being reported now leaves the team in an unenviable position. The team's injury report reads like a book of the walking wounded and Romo's loss won't be lost on the fans or owner Jerry Jones himself. Say nothing of which coach Wade Phillips' position must be now be somewhat of a dire situation. Especially when one considers that Jones' patience must be close to reaching its boiling point. He's been made to look an ass by a player whom he thought that he could trust. Now it'd appear that with the punishment meted out by the NFL , Jones' career with the Cowboys and the NFL may well be shortlived. It's extremely hard to see where another franchise would be willing to take a chance on a player who's been given numerous chances. But yet is unwilling to change his ways.

We can only summize as to what now will happen within the franchise and how it'll also affect the play of erstwhile receiver Terrell Owens. Of late he's being more vocal as to not being part of the team's offense. Offensive coordinator Jason Garrett and coach Wade Phillips have remained reticent as to the reason to the lack Owens being part of the Cowboys' offense. Though it hasn't gone unnoticed that in several games this season Owens has been his usual productive self. He's been somewhat inconsistent and in a couple of games he's not been so assured in separating from man to man coverage. And the unthinkable has happened where we've witnessed Owens dropping catchable balls thrown to him by Romo.
Newly acquired wide receiver Roy Williams shakes hands with Cowboys' owner Jerry Jones at the team's training faclity in Irving , Texas . picture appears courtesy of ap/photo/ Tony Gutierrez ........................
The addition of receiver Roy Williams will add to an already loaded offensive arsenal on this team. They have in tight end Jason Witten , receivers Miles Austin , Patrick Crayton , Sam Hurd , running backs Marion Barber III , Felix Jones and fullback Deon Anderson a plethora of stars that make this team as competitive as any within the league. And defensively there's a litany Pro Bowlers that are capable of competing with the best. Unfortunately what was lost on Jones as the owner of this franchise was the fact that the team doesn't possess a real leader . In the heady days when this franchise was the epitome of success during their winning of three Superbowls in five years . You could always count on the fact that in Emmitt Smith , Troy Aiken, Michael Irvine and Jay Novacek you had vocal leaders who laid down the law to their teammates . And they were only all too willing to listen. Something that's redundant when it comes to this current Cowboys' roster and its roster of stars.
Cowboys' starting quarterback Tony Romo leaves the team's training facility. Romo is expected to miss anywhere up six weeks due to an injury. picture appears courtesy of ap/photo/Tony Gutierrez ......................................
The season as it has now played out, has left many with the feeling that the presumptive favorites in the guise of the Dallas Cowboys are overrated . They've yet to live up to the lofty expectations that led many to believe that they were the clear cut representatives of the NFC. They're more likely to be in a constant struggle to acquit themselves well until the return of Tony Romo as the team's signal caller. His backup Brad Johnson will be asked to take over the reins of the team and guide the team as ably as he can. As a former Superbowl winning quarterback with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, it is hoped that his skills haven't slowly eroded over the course of time.
Newly acquired receiver Roy Williams speaks with members of the press inside the locker room of the Dallas Cowboys' training facility in Irving, Texas. pictures appears courtesy of ap/photo/ Tony Gutierrez .......................
The biggest problem now for the team is to put this whole episode behind them. And at the same time to prove to their fans that the team's hopes haven't been dashed as to their ambitions this season. Another year without hope and little to show for it and the belief will be that the team doesn't have what it takes to win. Their window of opportunity may well still be there. But one might say the opportunities for them to find that success is diminishing. Especially when we've seen the resolute stoutness being shown by many of the teams within their division. It doesn't exactly bode well for the team as it now stands.

Many of the questions posed to Phillips concerned Adam Jones' suspension by the NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell. picture appears courtesy of ap/photo/ Tony Gutierrez ................................
As for the ambitions of Jerry Jones he's now in the position where he'll be have to hope that the faith he's now placing Roy Williams will be repaid in kind. Williams himself has been best with problems ever since his introduction with the Detroit Lions. He's seen his role on the team diminish greatly with the emergence of Calvin Johnson. And at the same time the team had little to show in terms of anything tangible that'd be deemed as success. So as the remainder of the season unfolds it'll be interesting to see how the fate of the Cowboys will play out in the eyes of the Cowboys' fans and the public alike.

Well it's a sign of the times in this discerning and acute economic crisis that has been mishandled by not only the Federal government . But also the various agencies and businesses that the public entrusts to use sound business principles when conducting their business. The finger pointing and waving has already began and wherein we've now got the political pundits from both sides of the political aisle wading in with their irrational pontificating.

I ask myself where were they when much of this had begun ? It was clearly there for all to see considering the signs . But no one was willing to be held accountable for this mess and malaise. We had the proverbial response from former Fed Chairman Alan Greenspan that the housing industry and its vagaries thereof oughtn't to be any real concern when it came to the housing slump. Greenspan's successor in his role as Chairman of the Federal Reserve Ben Bernanke for all of his insight and knowledge has been thrust into this mess and now has to deal of the ensuing problems along with Treasury Secretary Henry Paulson. Paulson with each of his pronouncements now resembles a headless chicken running around aimlessly without direction or with any distinct knowledge as to what he's really doing.

Chosen by President Bush to carry out this $700 billion bailout of the financial sector. It now looks as if Paulson will most definitely have his work cut out for him. The financial excess of the administration as it is already, has become comedic in its excess. What's $700 billion here when much of this money isn't actually the government's to begin with ? The vast majority of it is from the revenues attained in the collection of taxes paid by the public and corporations. And much of it also will be raised by the futher borrowing from countries abroad by the issuing of bonds and other financial instruments far too complex for the general public to be aware of let alone to be explained.

But the real cause for concern for the public now is where will it all end ? And how much more of this can we possibly withstand ? The $124 billion bailout and counting of the commercial insurance giant AIG has left many of us wondering what the hell is going on ? And how come the members of Congress and this administration could have been caught blindsided and be unaware of this monumental mess ? Those who were asleep at the wheel have a great deal of explaining to do. It certainly doesn't help at this juncture that no one has been held accountable for their actions. From the public sector as well as the private sector this debacle has been awash with complete incompetency at all levels. Further understating the point is the mere fact that this bailout in terms of the money aportioned to be spent will far exceed what Paulson has asked for at this juncture. As the wheels continue to fall off the wagon (economy) we'll be seeing many more corporations coming forward seeking assistance from the government.

I'm not yet the one to put the nail in the coffin of capitialism. But at this point it doesn't seem to be too bad an idea to be a coffin manufacturer. A number of corporations will have to go under. But who in reality ought to be making the decision as to who should survive and who should fail ? Is it not about survival of the fittest more than anything else ? And shouldn't the laws of the jungle apply here ? Instead the acronym TARP has been created and we're led to believe that this'll be the relief that'll indeed solve our problems. The Treasury Asset Relief Program seeks to do what these companies failed to do in the first place and that is to act with due diligence. Instead they rolled the dice as if they were gambling with their own money. And in some respects they were but the caveat was the fact when all else failed they'd be able to look elsewhere for assistance.

Low and behold that's exactly what the government has done. And they're doing so with an excess not seen since the Bush administration saw fit to cash in its chips and regale Congress with the fact money would be needed to fight the war on terror. Well so far we've spent $1.2 trillion and counting . And this includes money spent on these so called no bid contracts billeted out to private companies where there's no real accountability that's said to be taking place as how the money was disbursed or spent. But you needn't worry as there's plenty more where that came from . Oh really ? We can always print it or we can just continue to borrow it from abroad as we've already been doing. Fiscally conservative polices run amok me thinks !

Much of what we're now witnessing on all fronts would appear to be nothing more than brinkmanship of the most obtuse in kind. The vagaries of this particular economic crisis and how acute it is seems to be lost on the legislators. And they appear to be using this topic as some sort of political bouncing ball. Rather than going about this matter expediently they're seeking to make some sort of point that at this moment in time is needless. Much of their own inactivity when first addressing this very issue was to look the other way. And now that the country sits within an erupting volcano now is the time that they feel to take action.

For Assistant Treasury Secretary Neel Kashkari whose position it will be to undertake how this money will be disbursed amongst many of these financial institutions. It can be said that he at this moment in time may well be the most powerful man on the face of the planet. Within his hands lies not only the fate of the economy but the very existence of every family within the United States and their entire lives for the foreseeable future. As Paulson's hand picked point man on this exercise. It has to be said that it's a job that even he couldn't envisioned at the beginning of the year.

And so now becomes the real topic of all what's rife with the malaise of the economy. The slumbering dinosaur that is the American automotive industry. Where the Big Three haven't produced a product in years that simply grabs the attention of the consumer. In Chrysler, Ford and GM you simply have three companies that are so lackluster, unimaginative , devoid of creativity and so completely out of touch with their demographics . The upper echelons of executives within the boardrooms of all three now seek to come cap in hand at the trough seeking some $25-$40 billion in aid. Once again the largesse of the government may know no bounds. But then again nor do the companies themselves that've squandered what goodwill they once had amongst the public.

Treasury Secretary Henry Paulson now seems to be backing off his original idea as to how he'd like to see much of the $700bn disbursed. Moving the deck chairs on a sinking ship doesn't necessarily make the situation a whole lot better in the eyes of the public. Especially when the life line being thrown to them on appearance seems to be negligible. There's very little assistance to be given to the working families or those who through no fault of their own find themselves within mortgage foreclosure crisis. But now it appears that having heard the cries of ourtage from the public and certain members within Congress there appears to be a shift in countenance from Paulson himself.

As this now all unfolds infront of the general populace we now hear the comments being made by NASCAR Chairman Brian France. His comments that the sport can still without one or two of the domestic auto manufacturers is indeed a bold statement. But in reality it's quite a serious statement. It's certainly not out of the realms of possibility that a viable domestic automotive industry may well be better of with just two manufacturers instead of three. But at this juncture it's something that the administration can't seriously think'd be in the best interest of the nation , let alone the economy. With the unemployment rate the highest that it's been over sixteen years 6.5% nationally. And with over 3,500,000 jobs totally dependent upon the industry. It's not something that cannot be taken lightly, nor should it be. The economy as whole is on the precipice and any slight push further towards the edge makes it all the more combustible. So what now ?
It's the question that has to be asked and answered by either this administration or that incoming one of President-Elect Barack Obama. The prevailing events of the past eighteen months has left all with something of a feeling of despair. There won't be any of us who won't go untouched by this mess. But to those who state that this bailout is further evidence of socialism run amok. Let's look at this what'd you now prefer to see ? The Big Three go belly up ? And then witness economy take an even bigger toll in terms of the unemployment rolls. Bearing in mind that there's still no certainty that these companies can survive in the prevailing environment. Or can we assume the best course forward is to allow this bailout to take place ? There are already rumblings within the Congress on both sides of the political aisle that this shouldn't take place at all. Well we've already seen the Congress make fools out of themselves by not placing certain restrictions on the benefactors of the public's largesse. Should we expect anything different once they go about debating the matter behind closed doors out of the prying eyes of the public ?

It may or not turn out to be the defining moment in Joe Calzaghe's career on Saturday night. But one thing is clear is that he's now reached the top of the mountain and is able to look down upon all that he surveys. Saturday night he'll meet the former undisputed middleweight , lightheavyweight and heavyweight champion Roy Jones Jr in a lightheavyweight bout that has been several years in the making.

Unbeaten former supermiddleweight and Ring Magazine light heavyweight champion Joe Calzaghe of Newbridge , Wales and the eight time world boxing champion in four weight categories Roy Jones Jr of Pensacola , Fla. The two fighters will meet on Saturday night in a televized fight in Madison Square Garden , New York. picture appears courtesy of ap/photo/Kathy Willens .......
Much of the delays were caused by the wrangling over the financial rewards for both fighters and who ought to get top billing. This time around however everything has been put in place with all of contractual obligations having been met. The i's and t's are there and the dotted line has been signed with both fighters' signatures. All that's now left for them both is to face each other in the ring on Saturday night. Though they're not fighting for a world title, the winner will be immediately recognized as the best fighter in this particular weight category.

Roy Jones gestures as he answers questions from the attending press about his upcoming bout with the unbeaten Joe Calzaghe . Calzaghe brings with him an unbeaten record of 45-0 , (32 KO's ) , whereas Jones possesses a 50-4 record (38 KO's). Though it has to be said that Jones hasn't fought anyone of Calzaghe's caliber in a number of years. picture appears courtesy of ap/photo/ Kathy Willens .......................
Joe Calzaghe has reigned over the supermiddleweight division for the best part of fourteen years having defeated fellow compatriot Chris Eubank for a version of the title in 1997. Unbeaten at this stage of his career he's now finally receiving the acclaim that many felt that he'd not duly received. But with wins recently over the likes of Jeff Lacy, Bernard Hopkins and Mikael Kessler , fighters of a proven pedigree. It is now that Calzaghe is finally capturing the public's attention here in the United States. His dismantling of Bernard Hopkins in a unanimous decision was about as impressive as they come.

In light of what we know about these two fighters and the very fact that there's somewhat of a disdain between the two. It's hoped that the bout will live up to the hype that's being created surrounding the event itself. Much of it is being created and orchestrated by Jones himself. In many respects he knows this may well be his last hoorah as a fighter. Gifted as he is and the renowned acclaim that he's achieved. Much of that goodwill that'd been built up over the years was literally thrown away because of his morose and bombastic nature . Never mind the fact a great deal of narcissism became part of his ever increasing loutish behavior. Throughout much of the late nineties and early part of the millena Jones was amongst one of the biggest draws within the sport. He dominated the middle and light heavyweight division with such audacity and ferocious supremacy. That he was being lauded as the best pound for pound fighter of this era and perhaps of his generation. But what was becoming more apparent was the ease with which he fought and beat opponents. He was beginning to lose interest and then would take on fighters of very little renown or ability. The fans soon became disenchanted with Jones and his antics . And he then grew weary of the fans and their dislike of him.

For both fighters this has been the culmination of what has been seen as a long lasting feud between two highly gifted and talented athletes. In many purist's eyes this ought to have been a bout that should've taken place when Jones was in his prime. But as alluded to before an agreement couldn't be reached as to where and when the bout should take place. And now finally that the bout itself has materialized. Were left to see who'll prevail in what's expected to be a very tantalizing and entertaining fight.

Title bouts we're told normally take place between what's deemed to be the best within a division , with the champion and challenger taking to the ring to prove their ring superiority. But with no title on the line on Saturday night at Madison Square Gardens. It'll be about bragging rights between these two distinguished boxers. Calzaghe knows in defeatng Roy Jones Jr he can join the ranks of the alltime greats within the sport. He's proven himself of being more than capable of going in and beating the best in the business. His unblemished record is proof of that. Jones for his part knows that in defeat his career would almost certainly be over. A win and the dye would be cast as to his legitimacy as to one of the great pugilists of our time or of any era for that matter.
Calzaghe listens intently as a question is posed to him by a member of the press about his upcoming fight against Roy Jones Jr . picture appears courtesy of ap/photo/Kathy Willens ...........
The fight itself billed as The Battle of The Superpowers carries with it a burden of expectation. Can Calzaghe maintain that unbeaten record ? Jones for his part looks to raise his profile once again in the eyes of the public at large and redeem himself as great fighter , not as a pariah of the sport that has treated him so well. And at the same time garner him with so much wealth and acclaim. There's a great deal at stake for both fighters as well as the sport itself. Purposely also there'll be others watching from afar.

With the sport being so fractured with so many champions within the different weight categories. There's still an unwillingness for many of the champions in question to face off against each other and unify the division. The lightheavyweight division in particular is no different from any other division within boxing itself. It now possesses four different champions each holding their respective organization's title. Hugo Hernan Garay holds the WBA title , Adrian Diacanou holds the WBC title, Chad Dawson the IBF title and Zsolt Erdei holds the IBO title. An array of titlists that no one really knows at all. The four fighters in question are eagerly awaiting the outcome. Hoping to cash in on what'd be an even bigger financial payday for them were they to offer the winner the chance to fight for their respective title. But whilst the appeal may well be there. It has to be said that a unfication bout between all four titlists would be far more enticing to the public as a whole. With the outright winner there meeting victor of the Jones , Calzaghe bout. But the politics that has now become rampant within the sport may well deny the public such an event.

So as it now stands what there is being offered to us as the next best thing is a bout that many of us have longed for. Calzaghe with his bruising punching power and an abundance of boxing skills goes up against a fighter who's known for his prowess as a skilled boxer , power puncher and elusive tactian in the ring. Time may well have down Jones and his skills may have eroded somewhat. But even on his best days when he sets his mind to it he's more than capable of making even the renowned of fighters look bad. For both on Saturday night in the epicenter of the boxing universe of Madison Square Garden. It'll be about all or nothing for both fighters. They have reputations to keep in tact and at the same time they're about to dismantle another's legacy. The odds favor Calzaghe because of his prowess as a knockout artist but that's not to say that he won't be patient and just use his boxing skills as taught to him by his father and trainer Enzo Calzaghe. Calzaghe Sr has been at his son's side from the moment he stepped into the ring as a professional and has guided him well thus far. And if this is meant to be Calzaghe's last bout as a fighter as he's acknowledged to the press. Then what better way to go out than beating one of the very best in the game.

Roy Jones' legacy is already emblazoned in the record books. And the stats are there to bear out his record as a fighter. Adding Calzaghe's name to that long line of distinguished fighters that he's met and beaten over the course of his career. Not only will it add to his stature but in the course of his career he'll met with and provided us some of the very best fights that we're liable to have seen or will ever see. Adding to the chapter of his career is a bold and noble thing. But it may well be an endeavor that at this juncture that could be beyond him. Had he taken this fight in his prime a decade ago. Then I'd have no doubt that he'd beat Calzaghe. But come Saturday night he'll have to draw on every ounce of determination within to deal with Calzaghe and what he'll be bringing to the ring.

This most definitely will be the battle to end all wars between the two fighters. So enjoy because it's not too often that we see two such accomplished fighters get into the ring to lay it all on the line.

It may well be one of the highlight games of this collge football weekend as Penn State takes on their much reverred rival Ohio State in a game that may well have ramifications as to both teams' national championship aspirations. And with both teams ranked inside BCS top 25 it will indeed be a meaningful game for both.

With Penn State (8-0) ranked #3 nationally and Ohio State (7-1) ranked # 9 this game has that persona that everyone will indeed take notice of. If nothing else with a resurgent Nittany Lions' team that has been laying waste to opponents like a marauding typhoon bringing devastation to all in its way. This game on appearance may not bode well for the Buckeyes. But in many respects looks can be deceving as the Buckeyes themselves though having been inconsistent in their play. They're now slowly beginning to find their groove under quarterback Terrelle Pryor.
Michigan quarterback Steven Threet (10) is brought down by Penn State's Aaron Maybi (59) and Ollie Ogbu(85) during a game played at College Park , Pa. Penn St would go on to defeat Michigan 46-17 in a thoroughly one sided game. picture appears courtesy of ap/photo/Gene J Puskar ........
Both coaches Joe Paterno of Penn State and Jim Tressel of Ohio St are two well respected coaches in the game who've reached the highest echelons of the sport. They're both well respected by their peers and players alike. And their knowledge of the game speaks for itself ! The Big Ten standings being what they are and with all the season now reaching a stage where any loss at this juncture within conference only adds to a team's plight. It can be said that a loss for either team would place a sever dent in their overall aspirations.

Penn State has been playing with a fericiousness and tenacity not seen from a Joe Paterno coached team in years. And it must be said that Paterno must now be revelling in this newfound success that the team is said to be attaining. And it's now leading to whispers that this may well be the year where see the team back in a national championship game. On both sides of the ball the team does have some exceptional talent. And no one would say that they don't deserve the overall recognition that they're acquiring. With such talented players as Evan Royster , Stephon Green , Jordan Norwood and quarterback leading Darryll Clark leading a potent offensive combo. It's undertandable why this team can't be taken lightly. Defensively this team is no slouch either with their defensive backs and linesmen showing depth in their physical presence and play. They're ably led by Aaron Maybin , Ollie Ogbu , Tyrell Sales and a slew of equally talented defensive players.

Coach Jim Tressel knows that the game at this juncture has to be the statement game for his team. They've played very unevenly for much of the season having labored to wins that usually would come to his team with ease. And that if anything is why many feel that the team has played very inconsistently. There have been days when they've looked very good on the field but immeasurably so there've been been days were they've looked marginal at best. And if anything it has become somewhat frustrating for their fans to endure. But that's not more so than any other team that has a distinct pedigree and status to uphold.
Penn State running back Evan Royster rushes for a 24 yd touchdown in the game played against Michigan in College State , Pa. The Nittany Lions would go on to win the game emphatically 46-17. picture appears courtesy of ap/photo/Gene J Puskar .................
And with the game set to be televised by ABC on primetime (8:00pm ET) Saturday night coverage. It can be said that many of us fans will be looking to see what both of these teams are really made of. Most certainly that's not to say that we won't be in for something of a surprise. Both teams are expected to come out with guns ablazing hoping to dictate the pace and flow of the game. And with Paterno's team playing with such zeal at present it'll be up to Ohio State to withstand and negate everything that'll be thrown at them by Penn State. This much we're sure off it'll be a game that may well be high scoring or game that'll be filled with mistakes laden by turnovers. There's an assuredness in both teams but it's the Nittany Lions who at present that seems to have everyone's attention. If nothing else there's a belief that this could well be their year if they play up to expectation and go undefeated. But as we've all seen with the college season thus far absolutely nothing has been a certainty on that score. Especially with a team ranked inside the top 10. Many have fallen by the wayside like drops of rain falling from the sky in an ever increasing abundance.
Ohio State receiver Brian Robiskie and teammate Terrelle Pryor celebrate Robiskie's touchdown scored against Michigan State in the first quarter of the game played in Lansing , East Michigan. The Buckeyes won the game 45-7 . picture appears courtesy of ap/photo/Al Goldis .............
As to how these two teams'll fare on Saturday night will be anyone's guess. But I wouldn't be surprised at all if Ohio State is able to pull off an upset. Likewise it wouldn't surprise me either were the Nittany Lions able to put up a double digit beating of the Buckeyes for all too witness . Letting it be known to all that they're for real and that they intend to be there at the end of the regular college and then to move on. Championship aspirations are dictated by what one does on the field of play and it shouldn't certainly be dictated by the thoughts of coaches , computers and a bunch of statisticians with nothing better to do.
Penn State quarterback Darryl Clark scrambles for a 24yd gain against Michigan in the game played in State College , Pa. picture appears courtesy of ap/photo/Gene J Puskar ...............
But such are the machinations of the college game that we have to make do by what it is we're offred by the BCS. And at this moment in time all we can do is to accept the outcome as a fait-accompli .

Thank you George Bush for showing us what a complete joke you've become ! With you and your administration about to leave office. Is it any wonder you're being viewed as an oaf ? The economy is on a downward slide and beyond that you're now deciding to use the public's money to bail out a financial behemoth in the guise of Citicorp.

This bank is the second largest financial concern by assets, second largest by deposits and customer base within North America. And now its chairman Vikram Pandit stating categorically that he has no intention of selling brokerage firm Smith Barney. It ought to tell you all that you need to know concerning the bank's intentions and that of the Bush administration.

Having Hank Paulson the Treasury Secretary as his point man of the bailout. It certainly now is making the public wonder that the hell is going on within the administration and whether or not they actually care about what the country is now going through. His vaunted meetings with the G20 group of nations has about as much clarity about it as his original response the dire state of the nation. Much like his apparent response to the bombing of the Twin Towers. His response here has been just as erratic and impractical. To have the attitude that the public's money can be thrown at any problem in order to solve it shows the connivance and perspicacity of the administration that has now become reactionary rather than proactive.

Incompetence seems to be the norm for an administration and Congress that has about as much resolve in dealing with the nation's problems as it has for dealing with the erratic legislation that they pass as laws within its hallowed halls. Can we say pork barrel? I'm sure that not one of those specific pieces of legislation has benefited the country one iota. But then again we do have that alleged maverick Sen. John McCain telling us what a conduit for change that he's been in his almost twenty eight years in the Congress. Needless to say his emphatic loss in the Presidential election was the nail in the coffin to his ambitions to hold the highest political office in the land. Pardon me for saying this but his actions hasn't exactly bared this out.

But my biggest concern now is what the administration considers to do with regard to Citibank and this further additional $25bn that it's now about to receive. As of yet we've not heard what constraints will be placed on the bank itself. We're told that the bank will take an equity stake in the bank. Furthermore they'll also guarantee the over $ 300bn in what is now toxic assets (mortgage debt) that in the long run will be worth absolutely nothing. But then again we're being told that these assets will appreciate over time. Well is that something that the taxpayer can really afford to hear coming from the administration and the Congress at this juncture ? Never mind that the incoming administration has its own spending initiatives with regard to stimulating the economy. What's another $100bn here, $200bn there ? Perhaps the administration can tell us where these funds are liable to come from ?

Center Prince Alwaleed bin Talal Al Saud of Saudi Arabia who is the largest private equity owner of the financial behemoth with a 6% stake in the company. picture appears courtesy of al riyadhnewspaper..
Now don't get me wrong it's one thing for an administration to come into an unquantified mess where the incumbent administration all but looked aside as much of the malaise within the financial sector took place. But now trying to close the barn door after the horse has bolted, is about as much use as a Band-Aid being used to cover a gun shot wound. They're bereft of ideas and in convincing the public that this is the right track the country is on. But then again what else are they going to do ? And the Obama led administration will be in for a hard time in trying to stave off the ensuing mess. The thing I now find strange is that we're no longer hearing those on the political right shouting their indignation as to what is now being done. Much of that blame we're being told stems from the fact that there was too much oversight. But that is ridiculous to say the least. The oversight if any was minimal at best.

Citibank's branding of many of its products are there to lure the consumer as with any corporate branding product. picture appears courtesy of ap/reuters/Ian Talbot ...............
So much of what has gone wrong with the economy comes from the mere fact that what little oversight there was in many respects was negligible at best. Where are those who ought to have been held accountable ? And now as such behind closed doors once again we're seeing the machination of a surreptitious maneuver taking place whereby the use of public money is being used to prop up a financial behemoth. The caveat being beware as to what took place inside the offices of AIG. Within three months they've attained in excess of $124bn and it's certainly not liable to stop there at all. An equity stake has been taken by the government in the company and they'll come under close scrutiny we are told. One would hope that's the same scrutiny that was placed with regard to the intensity shown when first deciding that it was in the nation's best interest to wage war on Iraq ? Albeit now that Sadaam Hussein was overthrown and in his stead we've now an administration led by Prime Minister Nouri Al-Maliki who's still struggling to maintain some semblance normalcy in terms of leadership and in setting asides its differences with its Sunni citizens.

But for now that's a bygone episode that can't be changed and in many ways it's indicative of what the Congress and the administration has been about. They're there at the start but are hopelessly devoid of ideas when it comes to resolving a situation. Sadly that may well be the case for the country over the next few years ! The whole world is now suffering from this economic meltdown. And the tremors being felt are indeed far and wide , so much so that even the cash laden petro-dollars within the Middle East and Russia may not be enough to stave off their own persistent troubles. China itself has and will spend in excess of $1 trillion on its infrastructure to try and stave off whatever economic eruptions that may well take place. The saying is ..."that when America sneezes the rest of the world appears to catch a cold". So for now we'll have to grin and bear the brunt of the pain that'll have to be endured.
FDIC Chairperson Sheila Bair addresses members of the House Government & Oversight Committee with regard to the bailout . picture appears courtesy of reuters/afp/ Timothy Bell ....................
Stimulus packages being what they are the last one at the behest of President Bush did little to ignite the economy. Much of the money bestowed upon the public merely went to paying off debts and very little of that went directly into the economy as a whole. Say what you will for tax cuts they do have their uses. But much of it is used as a subterfuge much like a child being fed a cough drop to cure what ails them. We're told that there needs to be liquidity in the credit market but even the banks themselves are loathed to now lend each other money at this juncture. And with Treasury Secretary Paulson seeking to infuse a further $800bn into system. The crunch that'll further take effect in the markets when it comes to the government's own spending could very well be placed in some jeopardy. Much of that will now be looked at with a great deal of scrutiny as to their spending programs. Cuts will have to be made in a number of programs and it could very well lead to a great deal of dissent within Congress. Bipartisanship or not promises and a great deal of arm twisting will have to take place if this Congress to enact any meaningful cuts to its budget. The deficit will most certainly grow to unprecedented heights. And with the ever increasing deficit will become so too will the increase in the national debt.

As with each fiscal quarter comes about and the more deficit increases, the more the economists will look at particular numbers that mean so much as to the direction that the economy is moving in. The jobless totals, inflation,GDP(gross domestic product) and a slew of other numbers that far in a way are more out of the layman's arena. The public tends not to be interested in such things but I'd dare say that at the end of the day I doubt that some of the members of Congress are all that concerned at all to begin with. They say that their concerns are with the strife that the nation is undergoing. But when they themselves are only all too willing to place the future of the country on a precipice it shows that they themselves aren't overly concerned as what the future may well have in store for its citizens. Platitudes asides when we see the members either in the Senate or Congressional hearing it seems that they're playing to the cameras, grandstanding much of the time. But that in ofitself ought to be expected. As we've not seen them do much else in a time of crisis . Much to the annoyance of the electorate the country's allies alike.

Citibank's office in New Delhi,India. The bank recently announced that it'd be laying off 52,0000 employees representing 14 % of its worldwide workforce in what's said will be a cost cutting exercsie. However the real jewel in their crown of the bank is said to be its brokerage firm Smith Barney Inc. One of the most trusted and respected of theall the great brokerage firms on Wall St. picture appears courtesy of ap/photo/Mustafa Quraishi ............
And what we're now seeing is nothing more than that same great deal of subterfuge and grandstanding that first took place as this whole debacle unraveled infront of their very eyes. Congress much like an administration tends to play up to the cameras in times of need or when they're looking to place onus elsewhere. Suffice to say that it didn't really happen on their watch, it only manifested itself that way.

Coming off his loss to Joe Calzaghe of Wales in a light heavyweight contest it was felt that former middleweight champion Bernard Hopkins should retire from boxing once and for all. The former undisputed middleweight champion having moved up a category to the light heavyweights then took and defeated Antonio Tarver for the lightly regarded light heavyweight IBO title. Hopkins though in the eyes of many after the bout was regarded as the best fighter within the division. Though it must be said that within the division the belt holders there weren't all household names.

Bernard Hopkins lands right hand punch to the head of Kelly Pavlik in the 10th round of their light heavyweight bout held at the Boardwalk Hall in Atlantic City, New Jersey. picture appears courtesy of ap/photo/ Tim Larsen ...............
Last night Hopkins in what many deemed has been illustrious career took on the former unbeaten middleweight champion Kelly Pavlik. Hopkins' opponent younger by 17 years was deemed a real test by those who felt that the always outspoken champion would now have to put up or shut up against an opponent whose punching ability was his greatest prowess. In his pevious 34 fights Pavlik's record has been outstanding with 30 of those wins coming way of a KO , 26 within the first ten rounds of a bout. But for Hopkins he saw his young opponent from Youngstown, Ohio as nothing more of an upstart who'd bitten off more than he could chew.

Hopkins again on the attack takes the bout to Pavlik by showing his aggression during the fight. picture appears courtesy of ap/photo/Tim Larsen ...........................
The bout held at the Boardwalk Hall in Atlantic City , New Jersey was a sold out spectacle . And for those in attendance it was an entertaining fight, albeit that the younger Pavlik was thoroughly outmatched by the more experienced Hopkins. From the outset this was meant to be a hardfought bout between two thoroughly gifted and though not necessarily evenly matched fighters. Hopkins prior to the bout set out to be the antagonist and chided Pavlik for what he deemed to be his somber and dour appearance . Such were the anecdotes being told by Hopkins about Pavlik . That it was easy to understand why many felt Hopkins was in need of being taught a lesson . Though admired for his talent. Hopkins at times can be all too abrasive, acerbic and if anything downright obnoxious.

Hopkins and Pavlik stand toe to toe in the middle of the ring during their light heavyweight bout held at the Atlantic City Boardwalk Hall , Atlantic City , New Jersey. picture appears courtesy of getty images/ Jeff Zelevansky ...............
For much of the bout it was Hopkins who it appeared was the more aggressive of the two fighters. And though Pavlik tried to put up more of a resolute response but it was to no avail. Hopkins didn't allow Pavlik at all to try and dictate the pace or flow of the bout. He negated much of what Pavlik sought in terms of being an advantage and rarely was Pavlik able to land a punch of any significance in the fight. And whilst the crowd in general had chosen sides with a great many of them showing support for the respective fighters. Most of the cheers were for Pavlik and there were also many in the crowd who cheered for Hopkins. Allegiances being what they are it could not account for the way with which Hopkins outmaneuvered Pavlik and made his younger opponent look all too out of place infront the large soldout venue that has seen so many classic bouts.

Hopkins lands a crushing blow to the head of Kelly Pavlil during the seventh round of their scheduled 12 round title bout. Hopkins would go on win the fight with a unanimous verdict. picture appears courtesy of ap/photo/ Tim Larsen ..................
The bout itself had its highlights and much of it was provided by Hopkins who proved at the age of forty three that he's still got what it takes to beat the best of the best when he's prepared himself the right way. He certainly didn't take Pavlik too lightly as he'd done with his previous conqueror Joe Calzaghe. This may well have been Hopkins' redemption but it now appears with this emphatic win over the previously unbeaten Pavlik he's placed himself back amongs the elite within the category and the fight game in general. It bodes well for the division as a whole and for the sport itself . But it does in all reality make the sport look all too sanguine when a forty three year old male is the most recognized name within the division. Though it must be said with the newly crowned Chad Dawson WBA champion and Joe Calzaghe being considered the Ring Magazine champion within the division. It can be said that there's now a number of directions that Hopkins can go in pursuant of his next fight.

Hopkins lands a punch to the face of Kelly Pavlik during the fifth round of their bout held in Atlantic City , New Jersey. picture appears courtesy of ap/photo / Tim Larsen ..................
In having derailed Pavlik's ambitions within the division with a unanimous verdict the road ahead for Hopkins ought to be clear. Retirement or continuing to fight on ? A rematch with Calzaghe seems out of the question at present as that'd be predicated upon him beating his next opponent Roy Jones Jr, a former nemesis of Hopkins in the middleweight division. That being said a big money fight with Dawson would seem an option and in all likelihood the winner would then go on to meet with the winner of the bout between Jones and Calzaghe . That as a premise would appear to be the logical step and the one fight that even the most ardent of fans would be prepared to see.

Hopkins poses with his daughter Latrece Hopkins after his beating Kelly Pavlik in a unanimous decision in their lightheavyweight bout held at Boardwalk Hall in Atlantic City , New Jersey. picture appears courtesy of ap/photo/Tim Larsen ....................
At this juncture it's hard to see where Pavlik goes from here ? Remaining within the light heavyweight division wouldn't be his best option. He's definitely not going to fare well within the division, as his punching power let him down and the very fact that he seemed ill suited within the weight category. By the fifth round he was fatigued from the pummelling that he'd been taking at the hands Hopkins. And though he lasted into the twelfth round by the end of the fight it was abundantly clear for all to see that he was never in with a chance of winning the bout. Returning to the middleweight division and declaring and reclaiming his supremacy there would by far in a way would be his best and only option. As talented as Kelly Pavlik is , he's not a lightheavyweight by any stretch of the imagination . But such is the allure of money that many fighters don't always do the most prudent thing when it comes to their well being.

Hopkins of Philadelphia Pennsylvania lands a jab to the head of the Youngstown Ohio native Kelly Pavlik during their fight last night held in Atlantic City , New Jersey. picture appears courtesy of getty images/ Jeff Zelevansky .........................
So now as we wait for things to unfold within the sport and the ensuing fights between Calzaghe and Jones Jr on the landscape along with that too of De La Hoya and Pacquaio. It can be said that with fights such as these there to wet our appetites we're best served with bouts that'll have us craving for more rather than less. Fighters and promoters it'd appear at times are only interested in themselves and the fans are only an afterthought. It's become more about the money and not much else. But when we've got the likes of Hopkins whose only premise is to give the best of himself in order to entertain the fans. We can't really ask for much more can we ?

Nine time Grand Slam singles champion Serena Williams certainly knows how to set toungues wagging. Not only because of her prowess on the tennis courts. But most certainly because of the varied relationships that she's said to have had. Having been involved in an on and off relationship with wunderkind director Brett Ratner of Rush Hour fame. Williams' ambitions it would seem would nearing the zone where she may well feel that we'll soon be seeing her behind a mic belting out some soulful tunes.

Albeit that her staunchly Christian upbringing may well be tested. But that's another topic that can be left to be discussed for another day. The talented tennis player is now said to be involved in a serious relationship with multi-platinum rap artist Common. That being said whatever Williams' true ambitions may well be . Let's just hope that it won't take away from adding to her tally of Grand Slam wins.

Both Williams and Common have been sharing an idyllic time away on in Hawaii , surfing and enjoying what the Hawaiian islands have best to offer in terms of its luxury and tranquility. And who'd question the motives of the couples' wish to get away from the paparazzi. That being said when you're one of the most famous females athletes in the world it'd be extremely hard to escape their glare.

This is so much more wearisome than tossing a racquet overhead for a serve. But someone's got to do it . So why not Serena herself ? picture appears courtesy of starsurf/splashnews ...............................
Well if it's one thing that'll become apparent if Common is going to strike some balls with Serena he's definitely off to a good start and seems to be going about in the right way. No word as of yet though whether or not Serena will be indeed be playing with Common's balls or learning how to rap for that matter. But then again if the likes of Paris Hilton and Lindsay Lohan can cut a CD . Then why not Serena Williams ? Nobody would actually take them for seriously talented songstresses would they ? But then again in the world saccharine and sugar coated pop music anything can happen with right set of producers . You can make crap sound even better than usual !

I think I'll call Venus what a great time I'm having at present with Common. She'd never believe it so I'll text her and send her a picture as well. Hey Common let's hope that you're already tappin' that ass ? picture appears courtesy of starsurf/splashnews ..............
As for the ensuing relationship between the two it'll played out as long as they themselves will want it to remain in the public spotlight and public domain. As if anything else at this juncture in terms of a denial would really matter.

Here's the real proof in the pudding that the junk in her trunk is for real .

In or out of the water she's obviously fun to be around and then some.

A rather alluring and sexy portait of Williams as she looks somewhat demure.

And who woudn't enjoy Serena's rather ample assets ? I'm sure that Common has already had that pleasure to be sure !
The story begins and will continue as we'll abound to see what Williams'll be up to next. But rest assured we'll either be enthralled our bemused what happens with these two celebrities.

As alluded to before much of McCarthy's time is now spent as an activist on behalf of the Autism Foundation. She's written a number of books on the subject as well as addressing members of Congress concerning the matter. She's also made numerous appearances on a number of talk shows to concerning this very subject. And through her activism it has brought a certain amount publicity to the topic. But much of what we're out to glean today is not about either actress's activism or proclivities. We're merely in the process of debating which of them would be far more amenable to our tastes. Hopefully the ensuing pictures within this article will give us all something to think about before we come to a decision ?

As we can Nikki does have an exceeding amount to offer and who could blame someone for wanting to take a bite of that particularly scrumptious piece of fruit ?

If there's anything that needs washing , waxing and buffing . I'm so sure that Jenny would be all too willing to do that for you. As can be seen here in this amazing setting.

Nikki is there something that you'd like us to help you with ? Anything absolutely anything at all we'd be more than welcome to assist you.

If it's Jenny's intent to stay cool then it's got to be hot inside. And the best way to stay cool is to wear the least amount of clothing as is possible. You can always have a Coke whilst you're at it as well.

Nikki looking ever so demure wants to let us know that she loves all in her own particular way.

Jenny is telling us what we already know she's a dirty little mynx and she wants us to know it all too well.

I'm only hoping that Nikki can come up with something just as enticing and illecit. Yes we'd no doubt find this pose all the more appealing and with Nikki in bed. Is there anything else that one need ask for ? Hold your thoughts for a brief moment and then take a deep breath.
Well guys these are the pictures . I'll leave it for you to debate amongst yourselves and then come back to me with your comments and votes. Once tallied they'll be posted within this subject matter. And as always your comments are always welcomed. I'll look forward to reading and answering them all.

Well they met in what was meant to be a game of men amongst equals and meaning. Two of the SEC's conference giants in the guise of Florida and Georgia met in a game that'd have more than a distinct meaning as to both teams' national aspirations for the national championship. What no one could imagine is was what would unfold between the two teams.

On a day when coaches Urban Meyer and Mark Richt had their respective geared to play infront of a sellout crowd of thousands with millions more watching on television. What transpired leads us now to believe that Florida's demoralizing defeat of Georgia 49-10 makes them serious contenders for the national title and most definitely SEC aspirations and honors.
Florida coach Urban Meyer pumps his fist to show his encouragement for his team's play during the third quarter of the game played against Georgia played in Jacksonville, Florida. picture appears courtesy of ap/photo/Stephen Morton ....................
To say this game was lopsided at best would be an understatement . At no time during the game was Georgia able to come up with anything meaningful by way of an offensive presence. And the game itself became nothing more than a routine stroll in the park for the Tim Tebow led Florida Gators. Such was the prowess of Tebow during the game that Meyer actually chose to pull Tebow late in the game and have Tebow's backup John Brantley to provide for some mop up duty. In a game played infront of a partisan crowd in Jacksonville, Florida. It must be said that for the Gator fans in particular after last season's heart rendering loss to the Bulldogs. The animosity then between the two teams wasn't forgotten by the Gator players. The team more than redeemed itself with this prolific display .
Gators' quarterback shakes hands with Georgia coach Mark Richt after Florida's win over Richt's #6 ranked team with an emphatic 49-10 rout. picture appears courtesy of ap/photo/Stephen Morton .....................
The rout of Georgia who at one stage this season had been ranked #1 in the nation , will most definitely place Florida much higher in the rankings after this victory. Going into the game Florida was ranked #8 and Georgia # 6 in the BCS rankings . And with the likelhood that we may well see the demise of either Texas or Texas Tech tonight in a game to be played in Lubbock , Texas between the Longhorns and Red Raiders. The two ranked #'s 1 and 7 respectively, unbeaten most certainly will be ready to show their own prowess on the field. Much like their SEC counterpart they're both prolific teams on both sides of the ball. And for those who now feel that the presence of the SEC teams in the upper tier of the rankings is nothing more than cannon fodder for a debate amongst bloggers and tv pundits alike. It has to be said that the teams are showing their prowess where it counts and that's on the field of play. But others would have us believe that the vast majority of the teams within the conference are overrated. Well if that's the case then so be it. If the teams are said to be overrated then the controversy that those are wading in on gives credence to the very fact that there's is something worthwile going on within the conference in terms of football. What's allegedly being played within the Big Ten , Big 12 and PAC-10 while proficient bears no semblance as to the competitiveness being shown within the SEC. That's not to denigrate what's going on within those conferences. But appears week in week out it appears what's talked about as being the prodigious football being played within those conferences while entertaining it can't be said that a number of those teams mightn't fare well against the might of the SEC.

Florida for its part was never in with a chance of losing this game. They stamped their authority and identity on the game with their immediacy in negating the Bulldogs' strengths. Their running and passing game was anemic at best and quarterback Matt Stafford never had the chance to show talent that has been talked about and admired by many analysts up and down the country. Say nothing of which the praise that has been lauded on him by the talking heads within Fox and ESPN respectively. And with the incumbent Heisman Trophy winner Tim Tebow leading his team with a presence it has to be said today it was about what the Gators had to offer the nation by way of entertainment was more than worth it. They put on a display that was as dynamic in its prowess as it was in its efficiency. So overmatched were the Bulldogs of Georgia that had this been a a heavyweight boxing match with Richt's team on the ropes being unable to defend themselves. Then the referee would have to have intervened to save the Bulldogs from further punishment. TKO ?

As much as this game was played out on the national stage it says a lot that upon its culmination. We may not even see the merits of the Gators' success as it bears upon the rankings and the BCS committee. Such are the machinations and inner workings of BCS system that it'd take the whole assortment of astrophysicists working for NASA to come up with some sembling something that one would deem fair . Especially when it comes formulating the rankings.
Tebow and his coach Urban Meyer stand on the sidelines in dwindling moments of the game played in Jacksonville today. Tebow was replaced by his backup Jordan Brantley during final moments of the game. picture appears courtesy of ap/photo/ Stephen Morton ................
Tebow and his arsenal led by Demps, Rainey and Harvin ran roughshod today over the Gators. And if the team is to fare well over the rest of the regular season then it won't be just Jeffrey Demps , Chris Rainey , Percy Harvin and Tebow who'll have to ride the crest of the wave. But the defense as well will have to show their prowess. And the way that they took care of this Georgia offense spoke well of this team and the maturity that they've shown this season.
Georgia wide receiver A J Green is unable to complete a catch as he's defended by Gators' defensive player Joe Haden. picture appears courtesy of ap/photo/Phil Coale ...............
We can glamorize what we've witnessed today and say that it hasn't been prophetic to some extent. But in reality Florida's dismantling first of LSU and now Georgia ought to leave no one in any doubt as to where much of power lies within the SEC. For us much as Alabama is getting a great deal of love from the fans and patrons of the BCS alike. To many their ranking may seem justified but so often rankings count for nothing , as the games that are played on the field is what really counts in the end.

Unfortunately for the Georgia Bulldogs neither their size or bite was enough to waylay the Florida Gators today. The Gator chomp was self evident and there for all to see. So much so that the bite of these Bulldogs was nothing more than a mere annoyance to the Gator players, that was dealt with all too easily and at their leisure. Much of what took place on the field today can be borne out by the statistics amassed by the team. Tebow and his offense as well as the defense was as stellar as one would expect of the reigning Heisman trophy winner. But the heroics alone of Tebow wasn't the only thing that we witnessed today. It was a wholehearted team effort that was executed with efficiency and to the specifications of coach Urban Meyer. And with the surprising loss today by Texas to their instate conference rivals Texas Texas Tech. It has been an exceptional and pleasing day the Florida Gators' fans.

Well the Los Angeles Dodgers succumbed to the Philadelphia Phillies ensuring Charlie Manuel's team that they live to fight another day. But what does that tell you about their opponents the Dodgers as a whole ? In reality it tells us a great deal and therein lies the dilemma for the franchise. Were it not for them trading for Manny Ramirez from the Boston Red Sox. It's easy to believe that the team wouldn't have made it to the postseason at all. With Ramirez's addition to the team we saw an immediate upclick and presence as to how the team played. And under the clear influence and approach of manager Joe Torre, Ramirez was allowed to do what he does best . And that is to lay waste to an opponent's pitching staff.

Ramirez's postseason stats have bordered on being stratospheric and some might say with even more support from this teammates that the Dodgers could've put up much more of a resilient fight. Instead they bowed out with a wimper . As far as their aspirations were at the beginning of this season , at this juncture we can summize that they far exceeded those expectations. In the NL West division it was hardly envisioned that the team was infact capable of winning it let alone making the NLCS. Such was the belief that the teams who many thought that'd be in with a shot at the division's status were the likes of the Arizona Diamondbacks and the Colorado Rockies. But such was their play that to describe it as pitiful wouldn't be enough to do the word justice. The play within the division itself was in effect woeful . But such are the vagaries of the sport that from one day to the next we can't really tell what one would deem quality from what one would deem quantity.

Cole Hamels(35) the pitcher for the Philadelphia Phillies talks with manager Charlie Manuel while his teammates listen in. picture appears courtesy of getty images/ Jeff Gross ...................
The Dodgers now as a franchise has a number questions that have to be asked and answered. With Ramirez now becoming a free agent is it worth their while to invest in the player and ask him to commit to the team by signing a long term contract ? And it'd have to be a very lucrative one at that . And with Scott Boras as his agent one knows that the asking price will be high . In LA where we know that almost everything is done ostentaciously it's not out of the question to belive that Ramirez's asking price will be upwards of $20m per year ,for five years minimum. And most certainly Dodgers' GM Ned Colletti along with manager Joe Torre will be weighing the needs of the team against that of its long term future. The team has a good nucleus of young players as well as seasoned veterans. But many of those veterans in question weren't at the forefront of the team's play for much of the regular season and even less so during the postseason.
Dogdgers' player Manny Ramirez waves goodbye to the fans in Los Angeles having seen the team's hopes fall at the hands of the Philadelphia Phillies 5-1 in game 5 of the NLCS played in Los Angeles, California. The Phillies having won the series 4-1 now await the winners of the ALCS between the Boston Red Sox and the Tampa Bay Rays. picture appears courtesy of ap/photo/ Mark J Terrill ...............
What's clearly understandable is that the Dodgers' roster of players can contend given the right set of circumstances. And that they'll need to make some drastic changes to the overall makeup of their roster once the postseason ends. The fact of the matter is whether or not the Dodgers' ownership is prepared to make that sort of a commitment to the player and the possibility that he knows that they need him , more than he needs them. At this juncture it's prudent to think that the likes of the New York Yankees and LA's own crosstown neighbor the Los Angeles Angels may well be keen to show their interest the prodigious and prolific talents of Ramirez. Certainly money won't be a deterrent to either team. But it begs the question how far are the Dodgers prepared to go ? And what do they intend to do to keep the player and at the same time appease their success starved fans ? The all too disruptive nature of his presence in Red Sox's locker room it'd appear to be something in his past. But with Ramirez one can never tell what lays around the corner or is indeed lurking within his midst. Unless his ego is massaged frequently Ramirez can be held in check . Something it would appear that the hierarchy and the players in Boston were no longer prepared to do. There's a feeling now that had they done this then their present predicament in the ALCS wouldn't be so dire.

Owner Frank McCourt (l) and Special Advisor to the Chairman Tommy Lasorda (r) share a few words after the team's defeat at the hands of the Philadelphia Phillies 5-1 in game 5 of the NLCS played yesterday in Dodger Stadium, Los Angelel, California. picture appears courtesy of getty images/ Harry How .....................
And with the travails of both the Angels and Yankees being so unproductive this season in terms of substantiative success. We all know that no stone will be left unturned as no doubt each'll attempt to lure Ramirez to what they believe will be pastures green and fruitful. Manny Ramirez for his part has made everyone aware that he 's now a free agent but hasn't indicated what his preferences are. Albeit that many Dodgers' fans are hoping that Colletti and the owner Frank McCourt are prepared to open up the pocket book and offer Manny whatever he'll want within reason to stay in Los Angeles and remain a Dodger for the rest of his career. This much is certain with Ramirez not being the focal point of this team's offense for next season. It's hard to imagine them replicating the sort of success they had this season. With Ramirez's presence on the team the likes of Russell Martin, Casey Blake , Andrew Ethier , James Loney and Matt Kemp stepped up to the plate and showed their guile. Nowehere was the presence felt of Andruw Jones , Garciaparra , Furcal or Kent felt this postseason let alone for much of the regular season. Their production if anything was anemic at best and when one considers the outlay in terms of salary for the trio. One can understand that Ramirez would come to them at a premium.
Doders' shortstop Nomar Garciaparra clears out his locker stall at Dodger Stadium. For the player this season was one that saw him come back from injury but being unable to be productive for the team. picture appears courtesy of ap/photo/Ric Francis ................
In terms of the team's pitching roster they're ably led by Derek Lowe who's aided by Chad Billingsley , Hiroki Kuroda , Clayton Kershaw Joe Beimel . Having Greg Maddux provide leadership to the this staff has added some professionalism and pedigree to it. But one seriously doubts that Maddux himself will return for one more year. There may well be some addition by subtraction on both ends of the spectrum in regards to the team's makeup next season. The Dodgers for all of the fans' expectations of having made the postseason were clearly outmatched by a Phillies' team that was better in every facet of the game and who if anything just proved their overall superiority to their divisional counterparts from the West. When timely hitting was needed it came from the Phillies though it must be said that Manny did all that could be asked of him within reason. But for the inexperience shown by the Dodgers and the lack of leadership when needed. It was clear that the outcome of the series was a foregone conclusion once it started . Torre's guile as a manager is unquestioned but what he required from this team was resilience and determination. And it wasn't there to be seen when it was needed most from his players. Their gallant effort went the way of Philadelphia's previous opponents , the Milwaukee Brewers in the NLDS.
Manny Ramirez hits a solo home run that was to be the Dodgers' only productive output in game 5 of the NLCS game against the Philadelphia Phillies . The Dodgers would go on to lose the game 5-1 and the series 4-1. Thereby ensuring the Phillies' appearance in the World Series. picture appears courtesy of ap/photo/ David J. Phillip ......................
So for now we can but wait and wonder what'll materialize for the Dodgers as they seek to rectify their needs. One thing for certain is that if they're to have any semblance of success next season. Then it's paramount that their first option of business will be to re-sign Manny Ramirez , even it it'll mean breaking the bank. They can ill afford to have him go elsewhere and reek havoc as he'd so often done for them to their profound benefit. But then again we're talking about a franchise that in recent years has spent its money rashly and impudently without ever really gaining anything tangible in return. The choices are there for the franchise and it's now up to them to make a decision.

Well it had to happen top 10 teams are falling like flies in a plague set environment. Mizzou, , Oklahoma and now LSU. But it in reality it had to happen as the Tigers were woefully inept on the offensive side of the ball and in terms of defense they were equally anemic. Florida set about beating LSU that's not often seen in terms of its efficiency and execution.
Florida wide receiver Louis Murphy catches a 37 yd pass from quarterback Tim Tebow during the second quarter of tonight's game against LSU. picture appears courtesy of ap/photo/Phil Sandlin .......................
Tim Tebow led his team gallantly and by far and a way he was the best player on the field. And he was ably supported by Chris Rainey , Percy Harvin and a slew of other offensive weapons. Defensively the line held up and made LSU's offense look as if it had hit an iceberg much as in the same way the Titanic hit its iceberg in the mid Atlantic. The SEC and the teams therein showed why in the case of Florida and LSU how physical the game can be when it's played in an aggressive manner.
Florida running back Jeffrey Demps (2) runs in a 42yd touchdown past LSU's Drake Nevis (92) during the second quarter of this evening's game played in Gainesville, Florida. picture appears courtesy of ap/photo/Phil Sandlin .................................
Florida in its emphatic 51-21 win over LSU served notice that its national title ambitions haven't been vanquished. And if anything it made everyone else aware within the SEC as well as on a national landscape that it's still a team to be feared. Tenacious and ferocious in their play the Gators were clicking on all cylinders and it showed in all facets of the game. Coach Urban Meyer had to be pleased in what he saw in his team and the show that they put on for the home fans there in Gainesville. And for LSU quarterback Jarret Lee this was a learning process in which the physcalities of the game may well have proved too much for him. He was harrassed for much of the night and whenever the Gators' offensive line got to him they did so without mercy.
Gators' wide receiver Percy Harvin spins the ball in the endzone having just hauled in a 70 yd pass for a touchdown during the first quarter of the game played in Gainesville,Florida. picture appears courtesy of ap/photo / Phil Sandlin .............................
This was in every sense of the word a make or break game for the Gators. A loss and that would've dampened their aspirations within the SEC. Most certainly any national title aspirations would've been beyond their reach without them being assisted by other teams either within the conference or on the national front. But that's not what Meyer and his had set out to do tonight. This was very much their way of making their own fortune and not placing it in the fate of others. And with the array of talent on the Gators' roster, it appeared that everyone stepped up to the plate and acquitted themselves well. Running backs Rainey and Demps were more than equal to the task and Percy Harvin showed he's a deep threat whenever he's got the ball in his hands.
LSU running back Charles Scott (32) is stopped by Gators' defensive players Jermaine Cunnigham at the bottom of the pile and Matt Patchan right. picture appears courtesy of ap/photo/Phil Sandlin ........................................
Florida 3-1 within conference and 5-1 overall sit atop of the SEC East division and with Alabama losing tonight. It bodes well for Meyer's team and their ambitions. Statistically the Gators had the upper hand over their opponents. And with Tebow throwing for 2 TD's , 210 yds , as well as scoring a rushing TD. He was abetted by Demps with 10 carries for 129 yds and 1 TD and Harvin with 6 receipts for 112 yds and 2 TD's. And the manner with which the offense played must've been relished Urban Meyer and the Gator fans who may have been thinking when there'd be life to this arsenal.
LSU wide receiver Chris Mitchell (86) hauls in a from quarterback Jarret Lee during the game with Gators' defensive player Joe Hayden(5) being unable to block the pass. picture appears courtesy of ap/photo/Phil Sandlin ..............................
For Les Miles' team this may well be a foray up to Gainesville that his team'll want to forget as they were never really in this game. Offensively they were challenged and were never really able to get their running game going. They were held to a measly 80 yds rushing on 26 carries throughout the game. Jarret Lee as the team's quarterback had to acquit himself as best he could by throwing the ball and amassed 209 yds on 23 of 38 attempts with 2 TD's and 2 INT's. He'd be replaced by teammate Andrew Hatch after Lee had suffered a mild concussion.
Gators' wide receiver Percy Harvin hits paydirt with a 70 yd reception as he evades the LSU Tigers' defense on the way to his touchdown. picture appears courtesy of ap/photo/ John Raoux .....................
If ever there was a doubt as to the direction and the fate of this game . It was on display with the intensity shown by the Florida players. At no time did they allow LSU to dictate the tempo of the game and in Tim Tebow as the team's playmaker and leader. They overpowered this Tigers' team who were ranked as the #4 team by the AP Top 25. With Florida ranked at #11 it'd be wise to assume that they'll move up the rankings after this emphatic win. As previously stated it makes a statement to those who may have had some doubts as to the merits of the team and the direction that it was heading in. As to the heights to which they'll rise is open to question and conjecture.

The remainder of the season no doubt'll be filled with intrigue as it unfolds with a great deal of suspense. Surprises will definitely be along the way for many of the teams as their fates will lie in their own hands. So come what may let's see what destiny brings for each of the teams. Florida it'd seem has its own destiny mapped out at this juncture. But it appears that LSU's brief foray up to the swamp in Gainesville was unwelcoming one. For which it proved to be an immense disappointment for its fans and players and coaching staff alike.
tophatal ..............................
Well it happened today as the teacher and some might say the pupil met to match wits on the field of play. Strange as it may seem the coaching careers of Urban Meyer at the University of Florida and that of Steve Spurrier at the University of South Carolina have somewhat mirrored each other in their ascent to the upper echelons of the college game.
Florida running back Chris Rainey scamper into the endzone for a touchdown in the seconnd half against South Carolina, on the way to Florida's overehwelming 56-6 win over their conference rivals in Gainesville, Florida. picture appears courtesy of ap/photo/Phil Sandlin ......................
And whilst both have won national championships during their tenures. In this case both were won as coaches of the University of Florida. Their resume's speak for the themselves in terms of the accomplishments on and off the field. Spurrier known as the Ol' Ball Coach is one of the most respected coaches of his era and his record speaks for itself. In the case of Meyer he's most certainly one of the best young coaches in all of college football. He's a coach with a fertile mind whose belief that offense and defense can coexist alongside one another.
Gators' tight end Aaron Hernandez pulls in a one handed catch for a touchdown in the second half of the team's game against South Carolina. picture appears courtesy of ap/photo/ Phil Sandlin .............................
The SEC as a conference is as competitive as they come and even though there's the belief that the PAC-10 , Big 12 are the powerhouses . But in reality those who attest that the SEC is nothing more than a conference where everyone beats up on one another. Nothing could be further from the truth. It has to be said that without the vagaries of the intense rivalries within the division . We wouldn't be witnessing the exemplorary play of the Florida Gators this season.
Gators' running back Jeffrey Demps (2) makes his way to the endzone for another touchdown for the Gators on their way to an emphatic 56-6 win over South Carolina . Pursuing Demps was the Gamecocks' safety Chris Culliver (17) who was unable to stop Demps on the way. picture appears courtesy of ap/photo/ Phil Sandlin ........................
The fact hasn't been lost on those who've seen both Alabama as the #1 ranked team in the nation sitting atop of the Western Division with a 10-0 record, (6-0) within conference. And the Gators themselves with a 9-1 record and (7-1) in conference. The #3 ranked Gators sit atop of the Eastern Division and with an almost certain matchup for the SEC championship in the offing against Alabama. It can be said there'll be a great deal on the line for both teams come season's end. Both teams have national championship aspirations and what takes place today as well as their ensuing matchup will have a bearing as to who'll have the best claim for a berth in the national championship game.
Florida quarterback Tim Tebow greets South Carolina coach Steve Spurrier at midfield after the Gators' triumph over the Gamecocks. picture appears courtesy of ap/photo/ John Raoux ....................
Today in Gainesville however it was about the game between the Gators and the South Carolina Gamecocks. What unfolded on the field though not totally unexpected must've sent a shiver down the spines of those who witnessed what took place. Such was the execution in the efficiency of Florida's play that the game was a foregone conclusion by the end of the first quarter. Up 21-0 at the end of the first quarter and with Spurrier's Gamecocks not being able to muster by way of an offense. It was very much one way traffic and massacre that befell the Gamecocks was too much to bare for even the Gamecock fans who were in attendance. For the Gators' fans in attendance it was a chance to see Heisman Trophy hopeful Tim Tebow. Having already won the trophy in '07 his performances over the past few weeks does bear substance to the fact that there's a distinct possibility of repeating as a winner of the trophy. An achievement that has only been done once before by Archie Griffin.
Tebow greets the appreciative fans after the team's win over South Carolina. The game was played infront of a sold out crowd in attendance in Gainesville, Florida . picture appears courtesy of ap/photo/ Phil Sandlin ...........................
As alluded to before at no time during the game was there any evidence that Florida was in with a chance of losing. They stamped their authority and indentity on this game from start to finish. Furthermore in every facet of the game they thoroughly outplayed Spurrier's team. They were relentless on defense and even more punishing on offense. South Carolina for their part were unable to amount anything of potency to negate the Gators' play throughout the game. In defrrence to Spurrier it wasn't so much that his team was ill prepared. But it were if the Gators were a tornado that had touched down on the field in Gainesville laying waste to South Carolina along the way.
Spurrier congratulates his counterpart Urban Meyer after the game. For Spurrier it was his most lopsided defeat suffered in the course of his career. picture appears courtesy of ap/photo/Phil Sandlin ........................................
As to what this game means to the aspirations of Florida can't be understated but with Alabama today defeating Mississippi State. It most certainly means that their ensuing matchup will mean a great deal for both teams. It says a lot about this Gators' team that since the loss to Ol' Miss they've raised the level of their play. And that they're playing with such resolve and gusto. There's a quiet confidence about the team and a steady resolve. Meyer has made them all too aware that they can ill afford to be complacent down the final stretch of the regular college season. The postcripts that are written at this time of the year for a team that has national championship aspirations. Should they lose at this juncture it tends to spell doom and gloom as to their ambitions.
A slightly bemused Steve Spurrier looks bewildered having seen his team go down 21-0 in the first quarter and would fall further behind at the end of the first half. picture appeaers courtesy of ap/photo/John Raoux ...........................
It's hoped that Florida can maintain the momentum and keep it going. The players and in particular Tebow and the array of talent that he has surrounding him . There's no reason to believe that they're not capable of winning the national championship. Much of it will however be dependent upon the resolve of players such as Percy Harvin , Jeffrey Demps , Chris Rainey,Emanuel Moody and others on this very potent offense. Defensively the team has also stepped up its game. So much so that you get the feeling that once they step unto the field that there's very little that can penetrate this wall.
South Carolina tailback Mike Davis (25) is brought down by Florida defensive cornerback Joe Haden (5) during their game played in Gainesville, Florida. picture appears courtesy of ap/photo/Phil Sandlin ....................
With the Pouncey twins providing some of the stellar defensive play and others also contributing from all quarters. The Gators are now making a statement that people are taking note of. It's been said that the pupil will always learn from the teacher. But after today's performance by Urban Meyer's team you'd be hard pressed to say that there's anything that Meyer still has to learn from Steve Spurrier. There was no running up the score just one team completely outplaying the other in all facets of the game.

So for Spurrier his season is over as to the aspirations of his team. But he has to be proud of what he'd seen from a program that he put on the map , and that attained national recognition in the process. For Meyer he no longer has to be cast in the shadow of Spurrier's achievements even having won a national championship in the process. This is his progam now and what he attains with the Gators will be his legacy and his alone.

Well after last night's histrionics and heroics by the Boston Red Sox . One can't help but wonder if the baseball god's haven't something else left in store for the fans of both teams left in the ALCS. The Tampa Bay Rays leading the series 3-1 and seemingly in an impenetrable position and all that was being asked of this young and inexperienced team was to defeat Boston Red Sox. And thereby make their way to their first World Series appearance in their existence.

This Joe Maddon managed team has left the entire baseball world in a position of envy. They've become the Cinderella Story of the baseball world. This season they've gone from worst to first , winning the AL Eastern Division and along the way securing themselves a 97 game winning season. So was the surprise to the naysayers of the game that many felt that this may well have been aberration. For much of the regular season this team has shown its resilience and surprised themselves as well as their fans and the newfound admirers up and down the country. But as we've seen so much of what we see at times either tends to be an misleading and contrary to what's expected. For the Tampa Bay Rays everything we've seen , is as is. They are indeed a very good team and they play the game with a passion and intensity not often seen. But this is still very much a young and inexperienced team at its core.

Last night's heroics by the Red Sox may well have torn the heart out of this Rays' team. And one can only summize that after this diappointing loss they can regroup and regain their composure. In what turned out to be a highly entertaining and thrilling game. The Tampa Bay Rays got out to a fast start and with pitcher Scott Kazmir pitching like a seasoned veteran. It looked as if the team was well on its way to making history and at the same time derailing the Red Sox's hopes of attaining a third World Series in five years. With Kazmir pitching with a great deal of fervor and and the Sox's offense not seemingly being able to get command of his pitching . The feeling may well have been for those in attendance and watching on tv that the Rays were well on their way to a deserved victory. The Rays' offense in games two three and four had been potent and with B J Upton and presumptive rookie of the year Evan Longoria providing much of the team's offense. Home runs had become the norm for the team and there was the usual support provided by Carlos Pena who's proving to be worthy investment for this team.

If the first six innings of this game led us to believe that it'd turn out to be a mismatch as the Tampa romped to a 7-0 lead. What came about in the final three innings of the game was something akin to a thriller as the Red Sox inched their way back into the game at the expense of the Rays' relievers. Little did we expect to see Boston erase a seven run deficit and then eke out such an improbable and thrilling win. But then again we've seen this before from the Red Sox , coming back from deficits and pulling off the improbable win. Less we forget in last season's ALCS they layed waste to the Cleveland Indians' ambitions . And who can forget their coming back from a 3-0 deficit to beat their proverbial enemy the New York Yankees, once again in the ALCS. If we've learnt anything it's that the Red Sox can't be taken for granted or underestimated. But also one would like to think that the naivete' shown by the Rays and manager Joe Maddon may have made this win all the more possible. Relievers Dan Wheeler and J P Howell pursued the Sox's offense relentlessly and didn't take into account that they were allowing their emotions to get the better of them. Thereby ensuing the heroics of Coco Crisp and J D Drew. Crisp driving in the tying run and Drew hitting the game winning rbi single.

If there's anything that the Rays can take away from this game is that they know that their offense is ticking and if anything can be best described as being explosive. They've lit up the sky with a litany of home runs with much of the offense being supplied by young guns B J Upton and Evan Longoria. They along with Carlos Pena , Carl Crawford have provided much of the team's explosive offense this season . And it's to be hoped that they can continue to do this for the remainder of this serie , if the team is to fare well. Especially if they make it to the World Series where the Philadelphia Phillies awaits the winner of this series. But for the moment we'll have to wait materializes for the rest of this thoroughly entertaining series. Both teams have gratified us with their stellar play but is has been the Rays that's have captured the nation's sporting attention. This is the story that many are awaiting the climax of. It may well be the story that many will be telling their children and grandchildren about for years to come.

As previously stated within this piece the game started off with the Rays getting off to a tremendous start in the first 6 innings attaining 7 runs with some ease. Albeit that no one could've imagined what was about to unfold over the final three innings of the game. If anything there may well have been an over confident feel about the team. They may well have thought that all that was needed for them to do was to play with the composure already on display. Once Kazmir was replaced by Dan Wheeler in the seventh inning , it'd appear that the whole ball of wool began to unravel. Wheeler was unable to keep his composure and in effect through his errant play in terms of his pitching and that of closer J P Howell . The Red Sox be it ever so fortuitously was allowed back into the game and the series as a whole. And the rest as they say is history .

Rays' starting pitcher Scott Kazmir on the mound delivers a pitch against the Boston Red Sox at Fenway Park during game 5. The Red Sox would go on to win the game 8-7 and now still face an uphill battle in evening the series with the remaining two games to played at Tropicana Field in St Petersburg ,Florida. The Rays now lead the Sox in the best of 7 series 3-2. And now only needs to win one of the two remaining games in order to attain a berth in the World Series. picture appears courtesy of getty images/ Jim McIsaac ..........
As the series now awaits its resumption tomorrow night . The thought now must be whether or not the Tampa Bay Rays can reattain its composure and finally see off the Boston Red Sox. On the other hand the Sox have put themselves in a position where the expectations are high from their fans . If nothing else if they're able to pull off the two wins needed to garner a berth in the World Series . Then we can all say that was been achieved by this team has been truely spectacular. The postseason as with any sport is filled with highs, lows , thrills and a great deal of excitement . And we as fans can thoroughly lap it up and enjoy it while it unfolds infront of our every eyes. Who'd have guessed that a team of Tampa Bay's resolve and resilience would be providing us with so much revelry at this juncture ?

Carlos Pena of the Rays is congratulated by teammate B J Upton after Pena hit a two run home run during third inning of game 5 of the ALCS. picture appears courtesy of getty images/ Jim McIsaac .........................
This team may not have the allure and attraction of more storied franchises . But what it has provided us with this season is the very fact they've got other small market teams believing what is possible when one sets one's mind to achieving the impossible. At this juncture the inevitable may not seem possible. But impossible may well be becoming inevitable when it comes to the Tampa Bay Rays. From worse to first and the glory that lays ahead can't be all that bad. But a lot will now be predicated on what the Rays and pitcher James Shields will have in store for his counterpart Josh Beckett and his teammates. If nothing else Shields'll have to step up to the plate and have a commanding performance if his team is to win. And in every facet of their game they'll have to play to their optimum level and show commitment to what Joe Maddon has set out to achieve this postseason.
The Red Sox's J D Drew blasts a two run homer of Rays' pitcher Dan Wheeler during the eighth inning of game 5 of the ALCS at Fenway Park. picture appears courtesy of ap/photo/Charles Krupa ...........................
By all means watch what unfolds but you've been warned this series isn't over yet by a long way. Both teams are in it to win it . So let the chips fall where they may. One team has got to win and unfortunately one has to lose . So who's your pick at this juncture Rays or Red Sox ? Chime in with your comments as they're always welcome !.

Well once again a team that sits atop of the summit fails to live up to expectations. And in the Red River Shootout between Texas and Oklahoma . We've seen another number one ranked team fall to another ranked team. Albeit that now we've seen Oklahoma fall to Texas in another excellent college football.
Texas running back Chris Ogbonnaya is knocked out of bounds at the 2yd line by Oklahoma linebacker Keenan Clayton after Ogbonnaya's 62 yd run during his team's 45-35 win over the Sooners . picture appears courtesy of ap/photo/Tony Gutierrez.....................
Both teams came out with something to prove and the #1 ranked Oklahoma Sooners knowing full well that a target was on their back played in earnest against a Texas Longhorns' team led by Colt McCoy. In this game we had two of the nation's top passers and the prerequisite amount of talent on both teams. Never mind the fact that we also had two of the top college coaches in the game orchestrating the maneuvers of their respective teams much like a chess match. In Bob Stoops and Mack Brown we had two of the very best coaches in the college game matching wits against one another. However it was meant to be Mack Brown's day today. As his team upended the Sooners in a thoroughly entertaining and thrilling game.
Quan Cosby (6) of the Texas Longhorns pulls in a pass during his team's game against Oklahoma in a game played between the number 1 and 5 ranked teams in the country played at the Cotton Bowl in Dallas, Texas. picture appears courtesy of ap/photo/ Donna McWilliam ........
Oklahoma under the leadership of Bob Stoops stood atop of the mountain top knowing that a loss at this juncture would put a dent in his team's national title hopes. And with the Big 12 being akin to a conference that seems to be coming back to prominence in a big way. This game lived up to everything that one could've expected. Now the result drops the Sooners out of contention for the moment. And it casts an even greater doubts as to how they can regain their stature. For the Longhorns it places them within striking distance of the top spot amongst the college rankings. We'll no doubt have to wait for the findings of the coaches' polls as of Sunday night.
Texas safety Earl Thomas (12) intercepts a pass during the second quarter of the game that was meant for Sooners' receiver Ryan Broyles (85). The game was won by the Longhorns 45-35 and will more likely to place the team atop of the rankings. picture appears courtesy of ap/photo/ Matt Slocum .............................
As the season plays out in the grand scheme of things , it'll be hard to see what other scenarios will be played out over the remainder of the season. Inasmuch as we've seen the top teams take a tumble it would not surprise me in the least bit should Texas themselves fall to someone else along the way should they be ranked number one by the day's end. This whole season we've these teams fall like dominoes as if a tornado has seemingly cast its sight on the teams in question. The scarier the scenario becomes the more I'm inclined that if we were to bring in the writers in Hollywood. Even they couldn't come up with a better premis as to what we've witnessed so far this season.
Oklahoma wide receiver Manuel Johnson (1) is tackled by Texas cornerback Deon Beasley(7) during the second quarter of the game played today in Dallas, Tx. picture appears courtesy of ap/photo/Tony Gutierrez ....................
From the start this was a shootout and it continued in that vein throughout much of the game. But we knew that these were two evenly matched teams and that they'd give each other no quarter. But mistakes came into play and it cost Oklahoma more than they could've envisaged. The play of both quarterbacks McCoy of Texas and Bradford of Oklahoma was of the highest order. But once interceptions came into play it was a misnoma that couldn't be unravelled. McCoy if anything has raised his profile and quite possibly now makes him the presumptive favorite for the Heisman Trophy. Though it can be said with the likes Chase Daniels of Missouri , Knowshon Moreno of Georgia , Matthew Stafford also of Georgia , Graham Harrell , Michael Crabtree of Texas Tech , Javon Ringer of Michigan St, and Chris Well of Ohio State. It can be said with this plethora of players . It's hard to say who'll win the trophy outright much like the national championship itself as it now stands.
Mack Brown and his players celebrate his team's win over Oklahoma and their raising of the Golden Hat Trophy which accordingly given to the winning team of the game played between Oklahoma andf Texas. picture appears courtesy of ap/photo/University of Texas/ Jim Sigmon ...................
The game itself as I've stated was one of ebbs and flows . And for those in attendance it was one where what they'd witnessed was great in a number of ways. Texas proved that they've now got to be considered amongt the contenders for the national championship. As things play themselves out through the remainder of the season. We'll see whether the likes of Missouri, Georgia , USC , Ohio State, LSU , Penn State and Texas Tech can place themselves amongst those who ought to be considered as a top tier contender. The rankings as they stand plays such a great part as to what's deemed appropriate by the BCS.
Dejected Oklahoma fans stay behind to drown their sorrows after their team's defeat at the hands of Texas. picture appears courtesy of ap/photo/Donna McWilliam ..................
Texas can now look forward to their next game where they'll face Missouri in what we can only assume will be another make or break game for the Longhorns. Missouri ranked # 3 have their own ambitions as to the national championship. Painstaking preparations will no doubt be of the highest priority. And one thing that we can be sure of is that Mack Brown had his team prepared for this onslaught from Oklahoma. Missouri on the other hand may well be another test of the team's will and resolve. And if they can withstand that then Brown's team can't be taken lightly. Not that ever were to begin with but as we've so often already this season what we're suppose to see and what we get are indeed so different.
To the victor belongs the spoils and for Colt McCoy it was a sweet victory indeed. He gives the fans the traditional Longhorns' salute to the raucous fans in the stadium. picture appears courtesy of ap/photo/ Matt Slocum ........................
So for now whilst Texas is riding high let's see how the other teams in college football can acquit themselves this weekend. If anything you can be sure that we'll be in for at least one or two more surprises. And as crazy as it seems I for won't be entirely surprised. It's the name of the game and in the college game almost anything seems to go as of late.
tophatal ....................................
Well this weekend will be filled with a plethora of college football games that may well seal the fate of a number of teams before the regular season culminates. There are two games that'll no doubt grab the attention of a number of fans. One in particular will pit the reigning national champions the LSU Tigers against their predecessor the Florida Gators. This game will take place in Gainesville , Florida infront of a sellout crowd. And within the SEC this may well be the game that the fans will be looking upon as a testament to what is truly good about the competitive nature of football within this conference.
Arkansas' running back Michael Smith(21) eludes Florida's linebacker Brandon Spikes (51) during their game played in Fayetteville , Arkansas. The Gators would be triumphant over the Razorbacks winning 38-7. picture appears courtesy of ap/photo/April L Brown .......................
The other game in question will be the Red River Shootout between the number one ranked Oklahoma Sooners against the Texas Longhorns. Both teams are resplendent in heritage and most definitely the loyalty of their fans. Infact the quartet of teams in question may well be amongst some the best supported college football programs in the nation. All four teams are ranked in the top 25 and if anything though these rankings are predicated upon the wins achieved against what one might deem lesser opponents. Each has been has hard fought nonetheless.
LSU quarterback Jarrett Lee looks for a receiver in the second quarter during the team's game against Auburn in Auburn , Alabama. As a redshirt freshman Lee would lead his team to a win . picture appears courtesy of ap/photo/Butch Dill ..............
Surprsingly enough for the Gators they're now (2-1) within conference and (4-1) overall with a number 11 ranking in the nation. Their sole loss came at the hands of Ol' Miss 30-31, a loss which surprised many. Either be it through being ill prepared or just the fact that on the day they underestimated coach Houston Nutt's team. This much however we can be assured of they can ill afford to make the same mistake twice against an LSU team that's chomping at the bit and hoping they can lay waste to the ambitions of coach Urban Meyer and his team. For much of the regular season they've yet to have that breakout statement game. And many respects the Gators have somewhat underperformed and not met the expectations that many had hoped to see. LSU Tigers' coach Les Miles knows full well what'll ensue once this game gets underway and most definitely will have team ready for the arduous challenge that he sees ahead for his team.

The game itself between Texas and Oklahoma will bring together two teams that've much to be admired with. Again we've got two teams that tend to bring out the best in each other when they play. And this time around there's no reason to believe that we won't be in for another treat if they both play up to their full potential. And the two coaches of the respective teams Bob Stoops of Oklahoma and Mack Brown of Texas are of a proven quantity and quality. Both having won national championships and celebrated amongst their peers as being amongst the very best the game has to offer by way of their coaching abilties. However this Saturday not only will be about coaching but also the will of both teams and their eagerness to play each other at full speed. Nuances or not these games'll be predicated upon skill , athleticism and determination.
Oklahoma quarterback Sam Bradford (14) seen here makes a play while his right guard Brandon Walker(73) looks to protect him from the advancing defensive players of Baylor. The game itself was won by the Sooners in an emphatic fashion 49-17 in Waco, Texas. picture appears courtesy of ap/photo/Tony Gutierrez ...............
The ambitions of these quartet of teams won't be lost on their fans . As nothing short of a BCS Bowl game or the national championship itself would be deemed something of a failure. Conference titles or championships are one thing. But nothing legitimizes the achievements of a collge football program more than a national championship. And for these quartet of teams laden with stars it benefits their programs if the games played result in not only a win , excitement for the fans but also it assists in the recruiting of future players. That's the bread and butter of the program besides offcourse the prestige and the large payout that a BCS Bowl appearance brings. The national championship payout brings with it in excess of $17,500,000 along with the prestige of being anointed champions of national college football amongst the Division 1A teams.
Gator quarterback Tim Tebow the current Heisman Trophy holder and a member Florida's national championship team of 2006. Tebow pictured here is seen playing against Arkansas in Fayetteville , Arkansas. picture appears courtesy of ap/photo/April L Brown ......
And with stars such as Colt McCoy, Tim Tebow, Percy Harvin ,Jake Lee, Chris Ogbonnaya all having a desire to one day play in the NFL . Games such as these are unrivalled in their prestige . One can well understand their wish to acquit themselves well on the field of play. If nothing else a moment of brilliance if only but for a brief moment will be embedded on the minds of scouts , GM's and NFL coaches alike. Say nothing of which the fans themselves will find it all the more enthralling. These games may will be played at an unrelenting pace and it'll take a bold prognosticator to predict the results of each. An for those amongst us who feel that Florida will have the determined advantage over LSU or vice versa . It'll be hard to predict the likely outcome. The same can be said for the game between Texas and Oklahoma who it always seems bring out the best in each other, no matter where the venue happens to be.
Chris Ogbannayo of the Longhorns makes his way to the endzone to score a touchdown against Colorado in a game played in Boulder , Colorado. picture appears courtesy of ap/photo/ David Zabulowski ............................
So as we move closer to the Saturday and the games themselves let's just hope we can enjoy the proceedings. The games themselves ought to be fun to watch. Look forward to it all and by all means come back let me know your thoughts on the games in question and beyond.

Well the NASCAR season is now breezing down the final stretch as the Race For The Chase begins. And in Talladega we'll see whether or not Jimmie Johnson can ease closer to an unprecedented third NASCAR championship in five years. And though the early season saw the dominance of Kyle Busch in winning 8 regular season races. It can be said that the nightmare has began for the young driver who's hoping to win his first championship in the NASCAR'S highest echelon.

The standings being what they are , at present Johnson sits atop of the table with the Hendricks Motorsports' driver holding a 10 pt lead over Carl Edwards and in third Greg Biffle , a further 20 pts behind. Busch , himself is in 12th place a colossal 311 points behind, with his only hope of catching the leaders is some divine intervention from the racing gods up above. And based on what we've seen anything can and is likely to happen. But it's highly unlikely that we'll see Busch rising to the occasion whereby he'll regain the lead in the standings.

Points leader in the Sprint Cup standings Jimmie Johnson sits in his car (48) having qualified for Sunday's Amp Energy 500 at Talladega Superspeedway in Talladega, Alabama. picture appears courtesy of ap/photo/John Bazemore ............................
Sunday's race at Talladega Superspeedway the Amp Energy 500 on what many consider to be one of the fastest tracks on the NASCAR circuit should be one of the highlights of the NASCAR postseason commonly known as the Race For The Chase. On paper it'd appear that this postseason may well be a three horse race with Johnson , Edwards and Biffle fighting for NASCAR supremacy amongst the trio. The pack as predetermined by NASCAR's rules leaves the remaining drivers fighting for the morcels of scrap left at the table. With only the top 12 drivers in the standings at the end of the regular season qualifying for the postseason phase of the championship. It's clear to see why this format was created to enlist excitement amongst the fans. And whilst it has its detractors there are those who are still excited by the format. It it can be said that the format also has its protoganists.

With the sport facing somewhat dire economic times and the woes of the country itself also in similar straits . NASCAR may well be facing perhaps some of the most acute problems that it has faced since its inception . These are very much some tough times that the sport is facing and it'll be down to the hierarchy of Brian France and Mike Helton to guide the sport through these arduous times. However many of the sport's most ardent fans feel that the sport's hierarchy has foresaken them in the chase for the almighty dollar. And that in ofitself leaves a sour taste in the mouths of many. The corporate sponsors, broadcasters basically brand and market the product under the guidance of NASCAR as the sport's main overseers.

Today's race may not be a harbinger of what's yet to come but should Jimmie Johnson win this race it augurs well for the rest of his postseason. He needn't strive for victory after victory but just place himself amongst the top 5 throughout the remainder of the postseason. The culmination of the season will come at Homestead Motor Speedway in South Florida and there a champion will be crowned.
