Classless ..........Hank It Takes One To Know One And You've Got None Whatsoever .........
Well now that the New York Yankees won't be making the postseason for the first time in fourteen years. We're now seeing what the organization is really made of. Showing a complete lack of class let alone etiquette Hank Steinbrenner as Chief Executive of the franchise starts to air his disappointment as well as disapproval of others whom he believes have led to the abysmal failure of the franchise this year.

Instead of looking within the franchise at his bunch of highly overpaid and underperforming stars. Steinbrenner in this case chooses to regale on what he sees as an unfair advantage given to others around the league. First he attacks the former manager Joe Torre whom he and the rest of the executives within the Yankees organization sought to forego. So was it any surprise that Torre himself would be snapped up and welcomed with open arms by LA Dogdgers' GM Ned Colletti and the franchise ? Further rubbing salt into the wounds now it'd appear that the Dodgers themselves are now on the verge of garnering a postseason berth in the playoffs. And whilst all of this goes on the younger Steinbrenner rants on why he deems it isn't fair that his franchise won't be making the playoffs. So much so that his rants are now becoming completely asinine and irrelevant.

Yankees' pitcher Mike Mussina a 19 game winner this season pitches against the Blue Jays during the second inning of their game. The Yankees would however go on to win the game 3-1. Inspite of it all the win however wouldn't provide them with any joy as they're now mathematically out of the playoffs. picture appears courtesy of ap/ Doug Lynley ..............
Were Steinbrenner and his GM Brian Cashman to take enough time to assess the real malaise within their organization they'd have seen that the franchise was woefully lacking in talent . Especially when it came to their pitching and one can understand that they'd lost frontline starter and ace Chien Ming Wang , as well as Ian Kennedy, Phillip Hughes and catcher Jorge Posada for much of the season. But what does it suggest you when they pin their hopes on a young Joba Chamberlain as the perceived savior for all their woes ? Never mind the fact that they'd brought back Carl Pavano. When last seen he may well have still been counting part if not all of the $45m that he's been paid to garner just 11 wins in four years. And yes we needn't be reminded that he too had been injured ! But with an aging Mike Mussina and a less than stellar Andy Pettite to lead your pitching one oughtn't to be surprised by what would materialize for much of the season. With the likes of Dan Giese , Darrell Rasner , Sidney Ponson being thrown into the mix. In many respects this was merely using a band-aid to cover a gun shot wound.

And if one thought that their pitching was somewhat anemic one can only describe their offense as slightly better. Manufacturing of runs is one but when you're heavily reliant on the long ball for much of your production. And what leadership that was expected was shortcoming from the likes Alex Rodriguez and Derek Jeter . I can only summize that Steinbrenner himself may have felt that he didn't want to damage the egos of either of the players by being overly critical of both. Never mind the fact that we rarely saw anything of merit from Jason Giambi, Bobby Abreu , Johnny Damon and Robinson Cano in terms of a potent offense. And it can now be only envisaged that there'll be a great deal of rethinking to do as to what direction the franchise will now head in. A $2oom payroll that in terms of investment paid back as much in terms of a divdend as one garner from the stock of anyone of the financial behemoths at present that's now under pressure on Wall Street.

And even with the implosion of the House That Ruth Built and the celebrations seen there there as they eagerly celebrated that last series played within the edifice . It's hard to see where and in what direction the Yankees now as a franchise will take. So they'll be moving into an even more palatial dwelling for the start of the '09 season. And much of that will come at the expense of the New York taxpayers and also at the largesse of Mayor Michael Bloomberg who at this moment in time is making himself look a complete idiot. His most recent comments as to the federal bailout on Wall St smacks of stupidity. When he himself has seen fit espouse the use bonds that'll be issued by the city to pay for the Yankees' new home at the cost of $1.6bn . As to the original concept of this being a self financing and complete privately financed project. One guesses that particular exercise was purely meant to entertain and attract those naive enough to believe it. But with even Bloomberg now opining on the malaise on Wall St , it smacks of pompousity on his part. But what the hell he's a self made billionaire isn't he ? And all that alleged altruism doesn't mean much especially when you're speaking out both sides of your mouth.

Now that the Boston Red Sox their arch enemy and the Tampa Bay Rays seemingly having each garnered postseason berths in the playoffs. It obviously pains Hank Steinbrenner even more to see both of these from within the AL East make to where they're often accustomed to being. Those heady days of being powerhouse within the game their grasp on the game was unquestionable seem to be on the wane. And it doesn't augur well if they're to resort to their old ways of spending their way out of trouble. Because as much as me way well despise to an extent what they stand for. We also envy them their success and the fact that they're story on the sports' pages that we may well all want to read about each day during the season. Hank for his part will nevertheless carry on with his tirades hoping that they'll resonate with those willing to listen. And the fact that people are even willing to give it credence shows us how much we're sometimes prepared to listen. But even then we can't afford to whatever he has to say as being serious.

And as we embark on the culmination of the regular season and with the postseason soon to get under way. It'll certainly be interesting to see how some of the teams'll fare without the New York Yankees being part of the postseason play. If nothing else it'll add to the suspense and at the same add to the allure for the fans. Hank's act is becoming stale as are the Yankees at this juncture . And now amount of excuses can exonerate their poor play throughout much of season. We champion the teams when they're good but in no way should even think about championing them when they're bad.
tophatal ......................
- It was classless for the Yankees to leave Torre out of the tribute they had for the final game at Yankee Stadium. Joe was the captain of the ship during the last great Yankee run, he should have been acknowledged.
- They left Clemens out too... but that may have been a good thing.
- Hank is kind of a whinner. I heard he was whinning about how it was unfair that the Dodgers were getting in the playoffs but had a worse record than the Yanks -- last I checked, there hasn't been any changes to the rules by which this game has been governed by! The Dodgers got in by winning their division and you didn't, Hank! Get over yourself. You don't see anyone whinning about your $200 mil. budget, do you?!
