Well  it   looks    if  Tyrone  Willingham's   days  as  the  coach  of  the  Washington  Huskies  are   now  numbered.   Willingham    though   not   having   been   fired   will   relinquish   his   duties   as   coach  of   the  University  of   Washington  the   moment   the   regular  season   comes   to  an  end.   For  much  of  this  season  the   Huskies   have    not  only  underperformed.   But   in actuality   they've  been   abysmal    on  both sides   of  the  ball.

For   Tyrone  Willingham    this   must   come  as  a  complete    embarrassment.  As   he  was   hounded   out   of   his   position   with     Notre  Dame .  That   notiwthstanding   this   latest    episode   may   well  put   an   end   to   Willingham's   career  as   a  college    football  coach   for   the   time   being.  The   team   has  been  somewhat   of  an  anathema  to  all  who've    witnessed    their  play.   And   if  nothing  else   the  University  of  Washington  as  a   program   has  regressed   rather     than   improve   under   Willingham's   tenure.   And  with   his    intransigence    in   terms   of   his   coaching,   the   program  has   become  a  laughing  stock   in  the  world   of   college   football.

The  PAC-10 as   a    football  conference   does   leave a  lot  to  be  desired. But  then   again   so does  much  of  college    football  as  to  the way  it   determines  a   national   champion.  Washington's  record    this  season   has  been   horrendous.   Be that   as  it  may   there's  seems  to be  no  explanation   forthcoming    from  Willingham   himself  as  to  the  malaise  that   the   team  and  the  program   finds   itself  in.  It  were   as if  he's   in a   sense   of   denial   as   to  the  ruination   of  the   program  as  it  now   stands.  The  team   is   0-7  overall  and  0-4   within   its   own   conference.   If  nothing   else  that  should   suggest  to  Willingham    that    this    team   has  to  be  on  the  wrong  path.

Statistically   the  team can  best  described  as  being   anemic    on   both   sides  of  the   ball.   And   it   has   to  be  said    at  this   moment   in  time  it's   hard  to  view   this   team   as being  competitive  within  its   own   conference   let   alone  on a  national  level.  The  players  there  seem  to   have  lost   confidence   in  terms  of  playing .  And   it'd   appear  that   each  week   that   they   come  out to   play   a  game,   the   team   seems   to  be  in   for  a  ritualistic   massacre  at  the  hands  of  their   opponent.   Nothing   was   more   telling    than  with  their   most  game  played  and  the   ensuing    loss   33-7  at  the   hands  of   Notre  Dame.    Wherein   Willingham   would  see  his   successor   Charlie  Weis    coach   the Fightin' Irish   to  an  emphatic  win.

The   game    though   not   played with  a  great   deal   of   ballyhoo  was   something   of  an   embarrassment  for   the  fans   in  attendance.  As   the  Huskies     could   seem   to  do   nothing   right on  the  field.  It  was   more   of  a  comedy   of  errors    on  their   part   as   it  was   the  all  purposeful   play   of the  Irish   who   came   to  play   from   the   outset.   As  to  what  this'd  suggest   about  the  coaching   abilities    of    Ty  Willingham    at this   juncture   must   be  surely   open  to  debate   and   conjecture.    Either  he's  a  woefully    inept   coach  ? Or   he   just   doesn't have   his   team  prepared    on   gameday   to   perform   at   the  highest   levels  one   would  expect  of a  college    football  team ?

Marginal   talent   at  best   is   how   one  could  best  describe   the   roster   of   the   Huskies.  As   there  aren't   really  any   standout   players  on  the  team.   In   Ronnie  Fouch   they've  a  sophomore   who  can  be  best   as  described   as   learning   the  nuances   of    what  it  is   to  be   a  starting    quartback   on a  college   team.  And   it  has   to  be  said   that  in   terms  of  his   offensive  complement    of   weapons   there   isn't   much   there  that   one  could   describe   as   explosive.   Though    this   is   an   extremely    young  team  on  both   sides  of  the   ball  and   is filled   with    freshmen ,  sophomores,juniors  and   seniors.   It  seems  that   in  terms   of  the   coaching   aspect  of  the  game   and   the  sound  fundamentals  thereof.   The   team   is   severely   lacking  in  its   application   of   the   rudimnetaries   of    what   one   deem  to  be  sound   fundamental   skills.  So  much  so, that   one  might   be   witnessing   a  high  school   varsity   team  at   play   against a  college    team  on   game   day.

Willingham   it  appears    doesn't   seem  to  accept   responsibility   for   the   team's  failures.  And   he   feels   if  given   the    chance  to   redeem   himself   he  can   make  the    the  program and  the is   team   successful.   But  this    would  be    based    on  what   ?   In    his  3 1/2  years    in  Washington   his    record    doesn't  seem  to  bear  this    out   amassing   an   11-32    record   over   that   span.  A  record   that   one    could  use  the   analogy    of   being  mediocre   ?  Say   nothing   of  which   you've    now   got   a    disapproving    fanbase   as  well   as  the   boosters    showing   their   complete  disgust   as  to    the   team's   lack   of   success   at this    juncture.  A  prudent    decision   it   must   be   said   was    made   to   fire     Willingham   but   he'd   remain   as  coach  of  team    until   the  end   of  the  season .    From   there    the    faculty  and   Athletic Department    can  start   afresh    in  pursuant   of   a  new    head    coach   for   the  program.

 As  to   Willingham's    future     who    knows   what   it   may   hold   ?   Certainly   as  a    college    football    coach     he  may  well   have    look      to   the   lower   echelons   of    the   college    game    for  his   next   postion.   Or   he  could  very    well  be   hired  as   in  some   capacity   with   another    college   program   at   the  Division  1A  level.    It's   not   so   much   that  he's   terrible    coach   but  more   so  that   he's   in  the  wrong   place   at the   wrong  time.   In  order  to  bring  a   a  program   to  fruition  and   see   the  success   attained.  One   has   to   put   in  the  work  in  all  apsects   ,  from   recruiting   to   coaching   and   above  all   the  assessment   as to   the  talent    needed   in  order  to  make  the  program   a  success.   Much of   what    Willingham   endeavored   to   ahcieve    was   being   done   at  a   snail's   pace   and   it  had   become    totally    unacceptable  to    all    involved   with    the    program.   Especially   those   within   the  upper   echelons    of   the   Huskies'  athletic   department    and   its    faculty.

As   things   now stand   for  Willingham   as   alluded   to  before.  There  may  not  be   too   many    doors   opening   up  for   him  in   terms    of  a  position   that    he    feels   may well  meet   his   requirements.   But  one  can   be  sure    that   he'll  either   land   on   his  feet.  Or  he'll   end   up   being a  dead  man   walking.  As   we  know  they    not  too   often    don't   have   many    tales  to  tell in   terms   of   success.    But  they  do   indeed   know   what  it   is  to  be  deemed   a     failure.
