If You Want To Be The Man Then You've Got To Beat The Man
Well the NBA season is almost upon us but much of what foreshadows the start begins with the postseason. And in many way though it gives us nothing to go on , it does as such provide us with some insight as to what the new invitees to the league are all about . Be they the draft picks or roster invitees who are free agents.

Last season the Orlando Magic were the divisional champions of the Southeast Conference . And though much was expected of the team they didn't fare too well in the playoffs having been defeated by the Detroit Pistons in the first round. Under the guidance of former Miami Heat coach Stan Van Gundy the team made steady progress during the regular season . And with the explosive talent of center Dwight Howard coming to the fore . Much had been expected from the team and his teammates as the foundations of those expectations were laid during the regular season . Unfortunately the script as it'd been written wasn't passed on to his teammates save that of Hedo Turkoglu who may well have been the only other bright spot on the team for much of the season.

The aspirations of the Magic , coach Stan Van Gundy and GM Otis Smith is to see this team progress and mature . If anything he'll also want to see some growth and character shown in the players such as Howard , Hedo Turkoglu , Rashard Lewis and in particular point guard Jameer Nelson. Who Smith no doubt sees as the mainstays of this team. If they're to prevail then their contributions and leadership will have to come to the fore. And with Howard having had a successful Olympics under the tutelage of Team USA coach Mike Krzyzsewski and being surrounded by stars such as Dwayne Wade , LeBron James , Kobe Byant , Chris Paul and Jason Kidd. It's his hope that much of that success and leadership quality shown by those players in particular will have rubbed off on Howard himself. Thereby making him a much better player and more of a vocal leader of this team.

Howard has shown himself to be an immensely talented player with a dominant and powerful presence. And is seen by some within NBA circles as a prototypical center showing all of the prowess needed to be a dominant player at the position. And at this juncture he may well be the best player at the position in the NBA. Though there may well be some who'll dispute that fact. And with the likes of Yao Ming in the Western Conference , the emergence of the Lakers' Andrew Bynum and the soon to be introduction to the NBA of the Portland Trailblazers' Greg Oden. One could summize that the NBA will see the re-emergence of the big men within the game. Not that they'd ever really departed in the first place. With Shaquille O'Neal of the Phoenix Suns on the downside of what can be described as a fascinating career. The mantle now has to be passed on to one of the young and emerging players.

The consitent belief is that the Magic has a team that can acquit itself well in the regular season but the postseason becomes an obstacle course that for them is filled with pitfalls. So much so that if they're to prove themselves worthy this upcoming season then they'll definitely have to raise the level of their game and play . At home they're a force to be reckoned with. But so often on the road there seems to be a lull in their play and desire to be competitive. This is something that they cannot allow to happen in the postseason especially when they're on the road. The coaching acumen of Van Gundy is without question as he's made the team all the more resolute on the defensive side of the ball but offensively at times they still look challenged. The main focus and production of that output does come from Howard himself. Who on any given night it seems can come up with a double double almost at will. Such is his prowess on the boards. But unless he's given full support by the likes of Turkoglu and Lewis then team does tend to suffer from the apparent lack of offense when he's not on top of his game. Jameer Nelson himself is only all too keenly aware of this. And he too knows that he's got to show more of an offensive presence and at the same time not become a liability in turning over the ball. It has become Nelson's achilles' heel at the most inopportuned of times during a game.

And with the Eastern Conference now reigning supreme with the Boston Celtics as the current champions of the NBA. It must be said that Orlando's own ambitions must now lay in that direction. However with the likes of the Philadelphia 76 ers suddenly becoming stronger with the acquisition of Elton Brand , the reinvigorated Dwayne Wade of the Heat and his partners in crime Michael Beasley and Shawn Marion hopefully proving to be adequate foils for his renewed desire. The task of rising further up the echelons of conference supremacy will most certainly have gotten harder for the Magic. And offcourse we can't forget the likes of the Toronto Raptors led by Chris Bosh and Jermaine O'Neal. Never mind the fact that you've still got the LeBron James' led Cleveland Cavaliers as well as the always dangerous Detroit Pistons. There may well be other surprises along the way in the Eastern Conference with regard to some of the other teams. But until they rise to the fore these may well be the teams that the Magic will have to contest for overall supremacy in the East.

The younger players on this roster will have to take their lead from the seasoned veterans on the team but it's also hoped that they too can contribute to the ongoing success of the franchise. Not since those heady days of O'Neal and Penny Hardaway has the team seen anything that resembles the semblance of success until last year's win of the Southeastern Conference division. And though the expectations are high and bar has been raised higher by Van Gundy and Smith. It's hoped that the team can prove to be competitive and acquit themselves well this upcoming season. The fans are expecting it as too is owner Rich De Vos whose vested interest seeing the team succeed is all bound up in the fact that a new state of the art venue awaits the team in the not too distant future. Failure unabashedly is not an option for him now at this juncture.

So as the regular season beckons for the Magic it'll be interesting to see what materializes for the team and the franchise as a whole. Their fans are expecting a great deal and so too are the fans of the game in general. If they're expected to contend then they'll have to do it at the expense of top tiered teams within the conference . By all means let me know what you think as to the merits of the piece and what you see as to the long term prospects of the Orlando Magic and the other contenders within the Eastern Conference. I'll look forward to reading your comments.

- I think Dwight needs that one player on that roster he can click with to have an effective two-man game.
Not sure that player exists yet.
Rev - Top... I'm going to be straight-forward with you. I always enjoy reading your stuff and I think you always have great stuff to say. However, the manner in which you neglect the appearance of your writing drives me (and I'm sure others) insane. The spacing between the words makes it difficult to read. There always typos abound (you misspell Dwyane Wade repeatedly) and so forth. For me, personally, this takes away from your work. Your style is your style, but bear in mind people will only take you so seriously if the presentation isn't there. You don't have to do anything crazy... just running spell check and making a simple font change would make a huge difference.
As for the content, you're always on the ball. I think the Magic are definitely one of those teams that can either disappoint or surprise, and it will be interesting to see how they do. For me, I think this is the year Dwight Howard becomes the second coming of Shaq. He's got four years under his belt. During the four years, his numbers have improved every season. The Magic went from 36 wins to 40 wins to 52 wins, respectively, the past three seasons. I think this year they will be a serious force, mainly, again, due to Howard. He got some Olympic experience as well in the summer. I think he will dominate this season. The addition of Michael Pietrus was huge too. Pietrus can play--he just never got the chance in Golden State, where it seemed there were always eight solid small forwards/big guards on the roster.
Howard may not have a bonafide #2 option to help him, but he does have a lot of good shooters around him. Let us not forget that both Rashard Lewis and Hedo Turkoglu are both 6-foot-10. Good luck trying to block them when they're pulling up from the perimeter. I think the Magic will be good this year, but I don't think they'll really scare anybody until next season (management will review what's needed and go after that final piece they need to get over the top).
Cheers. - Not enough gas to get past Boston, Cleveland, Detroit or Atlanta but Dwight Howard is a beast.
