Ricky Bobby Ain't Walkin' Thru' That Door Anytime Soon .......!
Well the NASCAR season is now breezing down the final stretch as the Race For The Chase begins. And in Talladega we'll see whether or not Jimmie Johnson can ease closer to an unprecedented third NASCAR championship in five years. And though the early season saw the dominance of Kyle Busch in winning 8 regular season races. It can be said that the nightmare has began for the young driver who's hoping to win his first championship in the NASCAR'S highest echelon.

The standings being what they are , at present Johnson sits atop of the table with the Hendricks Motorsports' driver holding a 10 pt lead over Carl Edwards and in third Greg Biffle , a further 20 pts behind. Busch , himself is in 12th place a colossal 311 points behind, with his only hope of catching the leaders is some divine intervention from the racing gods up above. And based on what we've seen anything can and is likely to happen. But it's highly unlikely that we'll see Busch rising to the occasion whereby he'll regain the lead in the standings.

Sunday's race at Talladega Superspeedway the Amp Energy 500 on what many consider to be one of the fastest tracks on the NASCAR circuit should be one of the highlights of the NASCAR postseason commonly known as the Race For The Chase. On paper it'd appear that this postseason may well be a three horse race with Johnson , Edwards and Biffle fighting for NASCAR supremacy amongst the trio. The pack as predetermined by NASCAR's rules leaves the remaining drivers fighting for the morcels of scrap left at the table. With only the top 12 drivers in the standings at the end of the regular season qualifying for the postseason phase of the championship. It's clear to see why this format was created to enlist excitement amongst the fans. And whilst it has its detractors there are those who are still excited by the format. It it can be said that the format also has its protoganists.

With the sport facing somewhat dire economic times and the woes of the country itself also in similar straits . NASCAR may well be facing perhaps some of the most acute problems that it has faced since its inception . These are very much some tough times that the sport is facing and it'll be down to the hierarchy of Brian France and Mike Helton to guide the sport through these arduous times. However many of the sport's most ardent fans feel that the sport's hierarchy has foresaken them in the chase for the almighty dollar. And that in ofitself leaves a sour taste in the mouths of many. The corporate sponsors, broadcasters basically brand and market the product under the guidance of NASCAR as the sport's main overseers.

Today's race may not be a harbinger of what's yet to come but should Jimmie Johnson win this race it augurs well for the rest of his postseason. He needn't strive for victory after victory but just place himself amongst the top 5 throughout the remainder of the postseason. The culmination of the season will come at Homestead Motor Speedway in South Florida and there a champion will be crowned.

Dale Earnhardt Jr as the sport's most popular driver though seemingly loved by all in and outside of the sport has yet to have his name etched on the Sprint Cup as a champion. And it's becoming increasingly apparent to many of the sport's fans that until he does win a championship. He can't be taken seriously as a perennial contender in a sport which his father Dale Sr enriched and graced with his presence. A seven time champion within the sport his name resonates within NASCAR for what he brought to it. For his son however it's been more about the personification of that of a playboy and the belief that the intent to win is just not there.

The sport itself now a multi-billion dollar industry has seen its tentacles spread across all demographics. It's now becoming apparent that Bill France wants a dominant brand and product that's family friendly. But there has been a certain amount disdain that for all of NASCAR's intentions with regard to minorities. It pays lip service to what they state their intentions are. But when evidenced by what we see transpiring leads many to believe for all of its machinations. It's nothing more than a point of appeasement to a fan base that's growing incrementally in minute quantities. Much has been made of the fact that they're trying to lure minorities on both sides of the sport. But the fruits of their labor hasn't really borne that much. There are no prominent African American owners in the sport's highest echelon. And other than Felix Sabates as the lone Hispanic amongst the the throng Caucasians . It's very hard to see how and when NASCAR itself will enable the very fact of having an African American amongst its cabal of illustrious owners. And when someone like Earvin Magic Johnson struggles to even have a place at the table to meet with NASCAR's hierarchy. It tends to give credence to the fact that the erstwhile ways of old within the humble beginnings of the sport hasn't really changed all that much.

- Tophatal, good analysis. I think Randy Moss is going about it the right way: starting in the Truck Series first and getting his feet wet as an owner. And hiring different drivers depending on the track so he can get the team as many points as possible. jon_464
