So There Is A Heartbeat To This Team Afterall ...........?
I was under the impression that the San Antonio Spurs of the NBA were asleep at the wheel. So much so that it has taken them four games into the season for them to notch their first win of the season in the NBA. Not something that one would associate with one of the more elite teams within the NBA. What to me has been even more surprising has been their apparent lackadaisical play in those first three games of the season.

Gregg Popovich as a coach is tolerant to say the least but at times he's been known to be cantankerous and ferocious when dealing with his players. So I can only assume that last night prior to the game against the Minnesota Timberwolves he tore into his players as ony he can. It's one thing to be playing badly but when there's an apparent lack of effort being shown on the court by the players. Then it has to be totally unacceptable not just to the coach but to the paying fans as well.

With the Southwest Division within the Western Conference becoming now even more competitive with the rise of the New Orleans Hornets under the erstwhile leadership of point guard Chris Paul. And then we have a resurgent Houston Rockets team led by Yao Ming and ably abetted by Tracy McGrady and the newly acquired Ron Artest. And less we forget we've also have the always competitive Dallas Mavericks and Dirk Nowitzki. Though it can be said that the Mavericks as a team has underperformed and not met the expectations of their fans and that of their owner Mark Cuban. The Memphis Grizzlies it'd appear it seems are in a rebuilding mode and one can only assume that they'll provide a competitive effort in their play throughout much of the season. Respectability may well be what they're above all looking for and anything beyond that would be seen as a by product and bonus from their efforts on the court.

It has to be said that I find it somewhat perplexing that the Spurs as such stood pat whilst many of their rivals within the conference have seen fit to add to their roster in order to meet some of their deficiencies. In the case of San Antonio , other than rookies George Hill , Anthony Tolliver an undrafted free agent and the addition of Roger Mason . There was little done by way of addition in terms of overall talent. Hill was the Spurs' lone pick in this year's draft. It can be said that the team's reliance on their core group of players namely Tim Duncan , Manu Ginobli and Tony Parker, though successful over the years . Of late it has become their Achilles' heel when it comes recurring injuries. With the trio on the court you can never count them out of a game. But with an aging roster and at times a lack of productivity coming from their role players . It has to be said that this team may well now be past its prime. But with that being said if you were to ask a number of the most fervent of NBA fans who they deem to be the most dangerous team within the conference when it comes to derailing the plans of the likes of the Lakers, Hornets , Jazz and Mavericks. You'd be hard pressed to find that there wouldn't be a number of them stating that the Spurs would be amongst the teams capable of stopping those teams mentioned.

The team's pedigree and experience shown, as well as the coaching of Gregg Popovich has shown us that they're always up to the task when they're fully prepared. Though based on them succumbing to the Lakers in last year's Western Conference Finals. There'd be many who believe that the team's best days are behind them and not ahead of them. As good as Popovich has been as a coach over the years, having won four championship during his tenure. His reliance on veteran experience has seen glaring weaknesses surface on this team. Defensively they can be as resolute as any team in the league. But in terms of real athleticism they leave a great deal to be desired. On some nights they're more than capable of lighting up the scoreboard much like a firework display lights up the sky. But there've been nights where on both sides of the ball they've found to be wanting and very much anemic in their display on the court. With that sort of inconsistency it can be said that they're not going to be successful during the regular season.

The Spurs would defeat the Timberwolves 129-125 to earn their first victory of the season. We know that the NBA season is if anything more of a marathon more than a sprint. But within the Western Conference it harbinges on the teams playing their best right from the start of the season and maintain some semblance of consistency. The season is early yet but who amongst would've thought that the San Antonio Spurs would be struggling to find their footing as a team ? Ginobli is injured and it's hoped that his return to the team will be imminent. If there's anyone who within this Spurs' roster who's viewed as a catalyst for the team to perform at its optimum. Then it has to be Manu Ginobli and what he brings to the team when he's playing well. Parker will score his points and guide the team as their floor general. And in Tim Duncan they possess the league's Mr Consistency. But when things aren't falling into place for the team there's a great deal of cause for concern. If last year's drubbing at the hands of the Lakers wasn't enough. A repeat of that feat again this year would be seen as unthinkable.

In light of what we know about the Spurs and what they're no doubt capable of doing. It's certainly good to know that finally they seem to have woken up and have begun to play the game of basketball as we know that they can. If last night's double overtime victory over the Timberwolves was anything to go by. Then we could see this team really make their presence felt this season. Within their division alone we can see that the Hornets are team that has found a great deal of confidence. And with their heroics of last season serving to wet their appetites for bigger and better things. It only proves to us that no team can really be taken for granted within the division much less the Western Conference as a whole. This season bodes well for a number of teams and with the Lakers smarting from their defeat in the NBA Finals of last season. And again they're viewed by many as the presumptive favorites within the conference. It can be said ambitions at this juncture begin with and will have to flow through Los Angeles with anyone who has an aspiration for the championship within the Western Conference.

The San Antonio Spurs as a team is certainly capable of proving their worth. But they're only capable of doing that when they're clicking on all cylinders. As evidenced by last night's victory over the Timberwolves. They fought long and hard to obtain the win and showed that with experience as well as adaptability they can overcome great obstacles. However at this early juncture it'd best to take this more as a cautionary note as to what can happen to a team when they just seek to remain the same as usual . Rather than adjusting to the changing environment around them. It's something that can be learned about life in general , rather than thinking that it's best for things to remain the same. With each beat of our hearts we're getting older but at the same time our body is adjusting to the ever changing environment around it. Hopefully Gregg Popovich will begin to realize this and do what's right to make this team all the more competitive and resolute in its play. If nothing else the Spurs' fans deserve it as do the fans of the NBA.

So as the infancy of the season begins to unfold we'll know what to expect of certain teams around the league. There'll be those who will be viewed as contenders and there'll be some that'll be viewed as pretenders. And then there'll just the usual number of teams that'll make a cacaphone of noise only to fall from grace at some point during the regular season. The postseason we know is where the fun and drama really begins but it's the regular season that's the starting point for much of the drama that begins to unfold. The Spurs have been there and done that. But it'll be interesting to see whether or not they can do it all again.

- Any team that Tim Duncan is on will succeed. Losing Parker for 2-4 will hurt the team though.

- You know I respect the Spurs...I hope Tony and Manu get back soon enough to keep them playoff eligible.

An array of subjects will be looked at by me and I'll try to offer my own insight to it all with some semblance of purpose.
