What Can We Expect This Season From The Los Angeles Lakers ?
OK so they were soundly beaten in NBA Finals last season . And perhaps that was a good thing for Phil Jackson's team. If nothing else they'll use it as a learning process rather than thinking that they were entitled to winning it all before they'd even set foot on the court. Such was the thinking of those within the city of Angels. The Los Angeles Lakers as a franchise has a great deal going for it. And when they're in the public eye , especially amongst the fans of the NBA it bodes well for the sport in general. And now with their greatest rival the Boston Celtics back to the fore it creates an even greater excitement amongst both fan bases as well as the rest of the NBA.

They were soundly beaten by a team in the Boston Celtics that took advantage of the naivete' shown by a team that never fully acquitted itself well enough on the court when it really counted. In Kobe Bryant they have a supremely gifted player. And in many peoples' eyes he is perhaps the best player of his generation. There may well be naysayers amongst us but the facts don't lie when it comes to his abilities. Bryant is in rarified air when they speak about him as a player as he's mentioned amongst the greats of the game . The comparisons between he and Jordan set the stakes and to an extent they may well be justified. But I for one feel that we can only fully make the judgement once Bryant has left the game for good. And then we can soundly make those assessments.

This upcoming season we'll see whether or not the return of Andrew Bynum will add that much needed spark that seemed to be missing from the team. Were it not for his untimely loss in the regular season due to injury perhaps the outcome of the Finals might well have been different. But that can be debated by others, as what happened in the past can't be changed as the facts speak for themselves. Over the course of the series there was much to find intriguing and enthralling by this team. Bryant showed why he's integral to the success of the team but it can be said without the presence of Bynum the Lakers' fate was sealed before the Finals themselves started. The loss of the series in six games (4-2) was heart rendering for the Lakers as well as their ever resourceful fans. But nowhere was it more profound than with Kobe Bryant himself. If anything he'll be out to make amends for the loss. And if the Olympics and the success attained there is anything to go by then his appetite for the upcoming season will be quenched.

In knowing that Jackson has now a fully fit Bynum and a roster of young players and seasoned veteran players that added desire is there for Bryant and the franchise to succeed. If nothing else he'll want to prove to those out there that he can win a championship without the aid of Shaquille O'Neal. The latter of whom it can be said after his triumph with the Miami Heat hasn't looked the same since. Needless to say that his form with the Phoenix Suns left a great deal to be desired. And while much has been made of the relationship between the two. It has been Bryant whose shown maturity whilst his former teammate has sunk to the depths of juvenlile behavior and asinine rants deriding his former teammate.

In what'll no doubt be a highly contested NBA Western Conference the Lakers are seen as the presumptive favorites to win the conference and return to the NBA Finals. But therein lies the rub we've seen the rise of the New Orleans Hornets under the leadership of point guard Chris Paul. And at the same time the Portland Trailblazers have all of a sudden become a team that has to be feared along to with the Houston Rockets . The latter two teams for which a fully fit Greg Oden will add bite offensively upfront and defensively for the Trailblazers. Whilst the acquisition of Ron Artest by the Rockets from the Sacramento Kings makes them more of a well balanced team. And with that triumvirate of McGrady , Yao Ming and Artest you'd be somewhat of a fool to underestimate their chances at this juncture.

The rest of the conference itself is still filled with the same perennial stalwarts such as the San Antonio Spurs , Phoenix Suns and Dallas Mavericks. Though it can be said with an aging team that in last year's conference finals' loss to the Lakers, the Spurs looked but anything like a former four time champion of the NBA. It's plain to see that if they're to get back to those lofty heights then the presence and leadership of Tim Duncan has to be complemented by even greater contributions from his teammates Manu Ginobili and Tony Parker. The fact of the matter is that the Spurs as a team may well be on the downside of what has been a fabulous run. But again the caveat being that one would be fools to overlook them as their inate experience has been something that they've always counted on. And with a coach such as Greg Popovich it's hard not to take them seriously as a contender. The Phoenix Suns and Dallas Mavericks are great during the regular season but if there's anything that we can be assured of during the postseason is that they're bound to self implode . It'd appear that they seem to abandon what got them to where they are, seeking something else that they're unable to obtain. It may well be the lack of leadership on both teams or the mere fact that the coaching when it really counts just doesn't seem to be there.

In Phil Jackson as a coach what he achieved last season with the team was outstanding. The nine time NBA champion as a coach seeks an unprecedented tenth championship. Having equalled Red Auerbach's tally of nine, in surpassing it. It would put to rest all the talk as to who is the greatest coach that the NBA has seen or had in terms of success. The six championships with the Jordan led Chicago Bulls speak for themselves. And add to that a further three consecutive with the Lakers does speak volumes for the man as a coach. But this season isn't just about Jackson as a coach and those achievements. It's about the franchise and their intentions to redeem themselves after last season's loss. Much will be expected and much has to be achieved if they're to get back to the Finals and avenge that series' loss. The players are on a mission to prove to many that they're capable of returning to the Finals.

Always the focus and center of attention Kobe Bryant addresses the press at the team's media day. picture appears courtesy of nbae/getty images/ Wendi Kaminski ...........
Bryant's demeanor and maturity will go a long way in guiding this team . His presence and leadership all assures us of that. And if anything the lesson learnt during the Olympics where he stood on the podium accepting team gold for his country won't be lost on him. He's embraced it and will offer points and counterpoints on what it's like to triumph when adversity stares back at you. If he provides them with that sort of a lesson and they respond in kind . Then there's no reason to believe why it is they can't return to the Finals and be triumphant. The talk is that with the Eastern Conference's win in the NBA Finals the confidence of the teams there will be all the more heightened. But there's still much to suggest that in the Western Conference the teams there haven't foresaken all and that the loss is but a small respite. The Los Angeles Lakers if anything are out to prove that to be a fact.

- I think the Lakers have to be considered the odds on favorite headed into this year. They will be returning Bynum, who even if he doesnt return to form, will give a much needed extra big body in the post season. Also, Boston lost a key defender and contributor in Posey. I actually think the biggest challenge will be New Orleans who added Posey and kept the rest of an excellent young core.
- Boston showed you how to beat the Lakers, sag in the key to contest Kobe and make them beat you from the outside. They don't have a consistent under the gun shooter that can keep defenders honest when it counts. Kobe is a scorer, not a pure shooter. Bynum makes them stronger in the middle but a shooting small forward is what they need. Lamar isn't that shooter.
- Posey had one good series. Lakers are still the top dog in the West. They need to trade Lamar for a shooter!
- Lakers will need time to fit their pieces together. I expect another very competitive season in the Western conference. I'll be surprised if the Lakers are unable to make a trade to improve their chances.
- The Lakers should be considered the early favorites to return to the Finals from the West, with the Hornets the most dangerous threat to their run. I think that Bynum's health is a key, but if they can improve the defense just a touch, they'll be dangerous.
