In the martial arts you're taught self discipline but above all respect for your opponent. Something if anything it's a life lesson that I feel we all should learn. Somehow or somewhere this was lost on the players and in particular the coaching staff of the New England Patriots at Gillette Field in Foxboro , Massachusetts on Sunday afternoon. If nothing else many were glad to see the Patriots and Belicheck in particular get their comeuppance at the hands of the lowly Miami Dolphins.

Dolphins' running back Ronnie Brown seen here laid waste to the Patriots' defense running for 4 TD's and actually throwing also a touchdown reception to teammate, tight end Anthony Fasano during the game. The win by the Dolphins was an emphatic 38-13 drubbing of their division rivals. picture appears courtesy of afp/getty images/ Jim Rogash ............
Under first year coach Tony Sparano, the Chad Pennington led Dolphins manhandled and mauled the Patriots into submission. That beating was so bad that one would've thought that they were witnessing the siege of Troy. Here however there was no subterfuge in terms of a wooden horse being assembled. It was deemed nothing more than good old proverbial as#s whuppin' of the highest order. And if there's anyone who should feel ashamed at this juncture it ought to be Bill Belicheck and his naivete' in thinking that the team was well prepared. They were slow ponderous and at times downright awful !

Well we all knew that the loss of reigning league MVP Tom Brady the Patriots would suffer some loss in terms of their offensive productivity. And with that loss it'd bring the Patriots back to the pack within the AFC East. In New York with the Jets and their fans seem to be exhilerated with the arrival of Brett Favre. What had been something of a listless franchise had been brought to life and the belief there was something might be in the offing for the franchise. Well in reality not much has changed since the arrival of Favre as to the competitiveness of the team. Some might even say they're still the same ol' Jets . But the real surprise within the division has been a rejuvenated Buffalo Bills team. There's been a resurgence of sorts that's not been seen since their dominance of the division and the AFC , when they went to unprecedented four straight Superbowls. OK so we know that they lost 'em all . But the feat itself of having reached four consecutive Superbowls has to be admired, the arrival there that is. The Bills for their part have announced their arrival and now sit atop of the division, off to a 3-0 start. What that augurs for the rest of the season no one at this juncture really knows. But it may well provide the Bills' fans and the entire franchise with a great deal of optimism.

The Patriots for their part as a team showed a lack of cohesion and if anything their play indicated that they were the team who last year played so ineptly for the season and not the Miami Dolphins. Rarely has a Bill Belicheck coached team looked so inept and lacking in creativity on all fronts. And if anything the upstart Dolphins made them pay for their ineptitude and the naivety of Belicheck and his coaching staff. The dual force of running backs Ronnie Brown and Ricky Williams was unbelievable. And in some respects both players as well Dolphins' cocach Tony Sparano must've thought indeed Christmas had come early thanks duely in part to the largesse of the Patriots lack of defense and their inept attempts at tackling . If ever there was a lesson to be taught here. It was not to follow the attempts made by the Patriots and their defensive line.

Looking completely dejected several members of New England's offensive line seated on the bench during the third quarter await their chance to re-enter the game. picture appears courtesy of getty images/ Jim Rogash ....................
And whilst most Pats' fans had to have been wishing that it was Brady on the field leading this team. It was becoming abundantly clear for all to see that this was not going to be their day by any stretch of the imagination. From the start of the first quarter to the final whistle and the culmination of this game , at no time were the Patriots in with a chance of victory. So listless was their performance on the field that one had to have been wondering what the hell was Belicheck doing while the game was being played ? Certainly his postgame interview didn't allude to much other than the fact that he felt that his team had been outplayed. But not once did he even have the temerity to suggest what the deficencies were on his team as well as that of his coaching staff. If nothing else by his demeanor alone Belicheck thinks of himself as an individual without fault and is accountable to no one.

An emotionless Bill Belicheck watches from the sideline during the third quarter as his team trails the Miami Dolphins. So porous was the Patriots' defense that they were outgained by a damning margin of 461-216 yards in offense. picture appears courtesy of getty images /Kevin Fallon ..........
And as an avowed Pats' fan at this juncture after this display let's just say that I'm not too enamored with what I witnessed. If nothing else one could view it as an aberration but on the other hand things are unlikely to get better if they're going to lay an egg every time they face that they deem to be less of an opponent than they'd usually face. It's also about showing character and being willing to face adversity head on. Yesterday that was the furthest thing from the minds of the players and the organization as a whole as they simply layed down and let the Dolphins trample and beat them into submission. And as much as the division within which they play is often considered nothing more than a stepping stone as to their postseason ambitions. This may well be the one time over the past six years where this franchise will be severely tested. And they'll have to put it all on the line to prove their worth not only as a team but to be taken seriously as a contender for postseason honors. For the last six years they've had their way within the division. However now'll be the time for them to really show their mettle now that they veil of invincibility finally seems to be slipping.

The self assuredness and mendacity to think that the AFC East was theirs for the taking is no longer there. And as much as there's a tendency to dislike Belicheck and all that he seemingly stands for. I for one would really like to see this team play with some heart and passion as I'd been accustomed to seeing over the last few years. As of now they're seemingly like a bunch of school kids who've been slapped about by the new bully on the block whose taken away their lunch money .

I'm looking down the tv schedule with regard to today's NFL games and I've a decision to make . Is it worthwhile to watch the Cleveland Browns take on the Cincinnati Bengals (1:00 pm ET CBS) ? To say that these two teams have proven to be a disappointment would be a profound understatement. With both teams 0-3 and their play about as putrid as one could ever witness. It wouldn't come as a great surprise to me if at the end of the regular season there was a major upheaval not only with the rosters of both teams but also with regard to the coaching positions of the two franchises.

In Romeo Crennell of the Browns and Marvin Lewis of the Bengals you have two very good coaches but it'd appear that they're unable to command the leadership and respect of their players. And though there might be the thinking that within both franchises there has been some internal turmoil. It can be said that in some cases it was of their own making. And the AFC North as it now stands appears to be about two teams the Pittsburgh Steelers (2-1) and the Baltimore Ravens (2-0) who sit atop of the division.

Cleveland Browns' quarterback Derek Anderson seen here attempts a pass against the Baltimore Ravens in a game played in Baltimore , Maryland. picture appears courtesy of ap/photo/ Matt Edelman ...............
The Bengals as a team led by Pro Bowl quarterback Carson Palmer have got off to an indifferent start which has been made all the more improbable by the inexplicable tendency of the team not appearing to have an identity let alone some semblance of showing competitiveness. Notwithstanding the fact that they'd reacquired often troubled running back Chris Henry. And as troubled as their fortunes might appear to be at present. A loss today for either team would definitely make their fate less than certain albeit that we're still only a quarter way through the season. Marvin Lewis has struggled to get anything tangible from this team on the field . Their play has been abysmal on both sides of the ball and that once explosive offense has been anything but that. And inasmuch the fans of the Browns would like to see some signs of life from their own team. It appears that the play of incumbent quarterback Derek Anderson seems to be lack of confidence in his own play and the lack of protection from his offensive line. Much of the time he seems like a deer caught in headlights.

And as entertaining as one could envisage this game to be , I for one enter into viewing it with some trepidation. As it could end up being one of two things in terms overall entertainment. A complete blowout for one side or something akin to a complete bore. Neither team has been playing an entertaining brand of football. One might put that down also to injuries suffered by both teams but at the same time it has been said that one should compensate for a deficiency by playing up to expectations and not down to the level of a lesser opponent . No matter what the adversities that one has to face. In today's NFL it's about the immediacy of now and not what you've done from years past. And for both teams they've now got tp prove themselves if they're to have any semblance of success and something tangible for their fans to appreciate.

One of the more intriguing matchups of Week 4 is that of Dallas Cowboys and Washington (4:15PM Fox) who are contending for a grip on the NFC East. The division itself is by far in a way the most competitive in all of the NFC , if not the whole of the NFL. Though there are those who may well think otherwise when one considers the competitiveness of the AFC South. Dallas with its high octane offense and a defense that when they set their minds to it are capable of competing with the best. They've a litany of stars on both sides of the ball. And with the likes of Tony Romo, Jason Witten , Marion Barber III, Terrell Owens and Felix Jones. One can understand why this offense has to be feared. They've an abundance of playmakers in many of the skilled offensive positions.

Marion Barber of the Cowboys tries to evade the Green Bay Packers' Al Harris' attempt to tackle him. The game played at Lambeau Field in Wisconsin was won by the Cowboys 27-16. picture appears courtesy of afp/getty images/ Tom Hauck ....................
The Redskins for their part are off to a 2-1 start but in reality that record if anything is very misleading. They've yet to really show true cohesiveness as a team but coach Jim Zorn on appearance seems to have them heading in the right direction. But you can't help but contemplate what might happen should the first sign of adversity set in. In owner Daniel Snyder it can be said that the has a meddlesome owner who just doesn't know or seem to want to delegate the reins of power within the organization. Zorn's opposite number Wade Phillips isn't in too disimilar a position. But in owner Jerry Jones they may well have one of the more astute owners and businessmen within the league. Jones' expectations for his franchise is high indeed as anything less than a trip to the Superbowl and win this season would be considered an absolute failure.

Miles Austin of the Dallas Cowboys celebrates his touchdown against the Green Bay Packers at Lambeau Field. The victory by the Cowboys was their first in Lambeau in over eight years. picture appears courtesy of getty images/ Tom Hauck ...................
As much as we're told that the Cowboys are America's Team it has to be said that since those illustrious days of Aikman , Irvin and Smith. The franchise has achieved very little of merit and yet we regale their accomplishments as if they're perennial contenders. They've not won a playoff game in almost a decade. This if anything is what pains Jones the most as he longs for those days when they were the talk of the town and on the sport's pages across the country during the regular season. Now they're considered the presumptive favorites for Superbowl XLIII amongst many of the NFL analysts and broadcasters. And even many of the fans themselves are buying into what it is that the Cowboys may well be selling. But if anything there's a caveat there for us all to be weary of as evidenced by last season's meltdown. If this team is ready to prove to not only their fans but the entire league that they're a credible pick to win it all. Then they'll have to acquit themselves in the postseason where it really counts and not just on appearance create that veil of invincibility which has been nothing but a mere illusion.

Cowboys' quarterback Tony Romo(9) is tackled by the Packers' Aaron Kampan during their game played at Lambeau Field , Green Bay , Wisconsin. picture appears courtesy of getty images/ Tom Hauck ..........
And as the day unfolds with regard to NFL coverage I hope that the choice you'll make will be an expedient one when it comes to watching the games. If nothing else we can hope only that the teams themselves will live up to the expectations. The NFL as a brand is as big as they come and the product itself is only as good as the teams that are on the field on any given day. So enjoy it all this day no matter what the outcome may be.

Well all isn't right in Jerry Jones' world at present. He threw his lot in with the hope that Adam 'Pacman' Jones could bring some semblance of respectability to the Dallas Cowboys. With the loss of Terrence Newman and Jones' arrival in Big D it was felt that this team could prove to be competitive within the NFC and the league as a whole.

Their standing within the ever competitive NFC East where teams such as the Cowboys , Philadelphia Eagles , New York Giants and Washington Redskins reside takes a toll on the teams during the regular season. And any ambitions that the teams may well have to postseason play has to manifest itself in they're having to raise the level of their play to even greater heights. With the travails and woes of the Cowboys comes the ever growing expectations of team that hasn't won playoff game in over a decade .

For Jerry Jones and this latest incident concerning the uneven nature and temperament of his cornerback Adam Jones would appear to be one of wishful thinking to begin with in the first place. Thinking that he could bring out the best in a player who in his previous place of employ with the Tennessee Titans was about as troublesome as one could imagine. The endless run ins with law enforcement and the fact that he'd outstayed his welcome with the Titans and his teammates would suggest that Pacman's problems were far from being solved. In steps Cowboys' owner Jerry Jones in thinking that he could make Jones his latest social pet project of redemption. It's an art form at its very best if proven successful. We've some semblance of succes with defensive tackle Tank Johnson. Who if anything so far has proven himself to be a reliable and resourceful addition to the Cowboys' defensive line.
Cowboys' quarterback Tony Romo fumbles the ball after he's hit by the Cardinals' Chike Okeafor as his teammate Darnell Dockett lays in wait for the loose ball. picture appears courtesy of ap/photos/ Ross D. Franklin .......................
And while no one it would appear wishes to question Jones' belief that he seeks to resume the lost souls of the NFL. It's becoming abundantly clear that this could well be leading to the internal friction within the franchise. With Jones' suspension for an alcohol related incident where he and a bodyguard were involved in a fracas where punches were exchanged between the two. Jerry Jones' belief that he could resurrect Pacman's career and bring him back to where he'd be a defensive presence on this roster had yet to materialize. If anything it was off field demeanor and actions that were being questioned rather than his on the field abilities. What certainly didn't help also were the losses suffered by the team to the Washington Redskins and Arizona Cardinals respectively. Sitting at 4-2 within the NFC East and (1-1) within the division , the team now finds itself sitting behind the Washington Redskins and New York Giants.

Adam Jones' loss may well be one thing but it has been the loss of Pro Bowl quarterback Tony Romo . That may well be the greatest threat to the franchise . Having broken the little finger on his throwing hand in Sunday's game against the Cardinals. His loss to the team from anywhere from four to six weeks as is being reported now leaves the team in an unenviable position. The team's injury report reads like a book of the walking wounded and Romo's loss won't be lost on the fans or owner Jerry Jones himself. Say nothing of which coach Wade Phillips' position must be now be somewhat of a dire situation. Especially when one considers that Jones' patience must be close to reaching its boiling point. He's been made to look an ass by a player whom he thought that he could trust. Now it'd appear that with the punishment meted out by the NFL , Jones' career with the Cowboys and the NFL may well be shortlived. It's extremely hard to see where another franchise would be willing to take a chance on a player who's been given numerous chances. But yet is unwilling to change his ways.

We can only summize as to what now will happen within the franchise and how it'll also affect the play of erstwhile receiver Terrell Owens. Of late he's being more vocal as to not being part of the team's offense. Offensive coordinator Jason Garrett and coach Wade Phillips have remained reticent as to the reason to the lack Owens being part of the Cowboys' offense. Though it hasn't gone unnoticed that in several games this season Owens has been his usual productive self. He's been somewhat inconsistent and in a couple of games he's not been so assured in separating from man to man coverage. And the unthinkable has happened where we've witnessed Owens dropping catchable balls thrown to him by Romo.
Newly acquired wide receiver Roy Williams shakes hands with Cowboys' owner Jerry Jones at the team's training faclity in Irving , Texas . picture appears courtesy of ap/photo/ Tony Gutierrez ........................
The addition of receiver Roy Williams will add to an already loaded offensive arsenal on this team. They have in tight end Jason Witten , receivers Miles Austin , Patrick Crayton , Sam Hurd , running backs Marion Barber III , Felix Jones and fullback Deon Anderson a plethora of stars that make this team as competitive as any within the league. And defensively there's a litany Pro Bowlers that are capable of competing with the best. Unfortunately what was lost on Jones as the owner of this franchise was the fact that the team doesn't possess a real leader . In the heady days when this franchise was the epitome of success during their winning of three Superbowls in five years . You could always count on the fact that in Emmitt Smith , Troy Aiken, Michael Irvine and Jay Novacek you had vocal leaders who laid down the law to their teammates . And they were only all too willing to listen. Something that's redundant when it comes to this current Cowboys' roster and its roster of stars.
Cowboys' starting quarterback Tony Romo leaves the team's training facility. Romo is expected to miss anywhere up six weeks due to an injury. picture appears courtesy of ap/photo/Tony Gutierrez ......................................
The season as it has now played out, has left many with the feeling that the presumptive favorites in the guise of the Dallas Cowboys are overrated . They've yet to live up to the lofty expectations that led many to believe that they were the clear cut representatives of the NFC. They're more likely to be in a constant struggle to acquit themselves well until the return of Tony Romo as the team's signal caller. His backup Brad Johnson will be asked to take over the reins of the team and guide the team as ably as he can. As a former Superbowl winning quarterback with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, it is hoped that his skills haven't slowly eroded over the course of time.
Newly acquired receiver Roy Williams speaks with members of the press inside the locker room of the Dallas Cowboys' training facility in Irving, Texas. pictures appears courtesy of ap/photo/ Tony Gutierrez .......................
The biggest problem now for the team is to put this whole episode behind them. And at the same time to prove to their fans that the team's hopes haven't been dashed as to their ambitions this season. Another year without hope and little to show for it and the belief will be that the team doesn't have what it takes to win. Their window of opportunity may well still be there. But one might say the opportunities for them to find that success is diminishing. Especially when we've seen the resolute stoutness being shown by many of the teams within their division. It doesn't exactly bode well for the team as it now stands.
Dallas Cowboys' coach Wade Phillips responds to questions posed by the press at the team's training facility in Irving , Texas. Many of the questions posed to Phillips concerned Adam Jones' suspension by the NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell. picture appears courtesy of ap/photo/ Tony Gutierrez ................................
As for the ambitions of Jerry Jones he's now in the position where he'll be have to hope that the faith he's now placing Roy Williams will be repaid in kind. Williams himself has been best with problems ever since his introduction with the Detroit Lions. He's seen his role on the team diminish greatly with the emergence of Calvin Johnson. And at the same time the team had little to show in terms of anything tangible that'd be deemed as success. So as the remainder of the season unfolds it'll be interesting to see how the fate of the Cowboys will play out in the eyes of the Cowboys' fans and the public alike.

Well the Tennessee Titans of the AFC South has gotten off to a tremendous start to the season. Not only have they suprised many within the NFL but they've also surprised the vast majority of their fans. One seriously doubts that they were expected to romp out of the gate and post an 8-0 unbeaten run at the midway point of the season.
Coach Jeff Fisher congratulates his kicker Rob Bironas on kicking the successful field goal in overtime that'd preserve the team's unbeaten record. Bironas' kick allowed the Titans to defeat the Green Bay Packers 19-16 in a league game played in Nashville , Tennessee. picture appears courtesy of ap/photo/John Russell ...........................
So much so that just about everyone in and around the league as well as the fans of the NFL has the Titans on their lips as to the topic of discussion. In Jeff Fisher they have one of the longest tenured coaches in the NFL. And only Mike Shanahan of the Denver Broncos amongst active coaches has as long a tenureship. And throughout that time both have seen the comings and goings of the merry-go-round of coaching changes that tend to go on around the league. But in the cases of both men their respective owners have shown them a great deal of loyalty through both the rough and the bad times.
Titans' running back Chris Johnson attempts to evade the tackles of Packers' defensive players' Atari Bigby and A J Hawk (50) . Titans' guard Jake Scott is in pursuit to assist his teammate in the play. picture appears courtesy of ap/photo/ Mark Humphrey .....................
What has been really surprising about the Titans' play has been the prowess that has been shown with regard to their defense. But you'd be sadly mistaken to think that this'd be the team's only strength. In the tandem of duo LenDale White and rookie running back Chris Johnson they possess one of the best offensive running tandems in the league. And the gusto that they've shown in wearing out the opposing defenses has left no one in any doubt as to how good this team is when it comes to running the ball. Defensively they've got a line that is filled with a talented group of players that'd be the envy of the league. In Jevon Kearse , Kyle Vanden Bosch, Albert Haynesworth and Tony Brown they possess a line that is as stifling as any one would ever wish to come across. And one should not count out the fact they lend their gifts to terrorising the opposing quarterbacks at their pleasure. The Four Horsemen of The Apocalypse may well now reside in Nashville , Tennessee. They may well have been characters of fiction. But were you witness this quartet play you may well believe that they're alive and kicking. And they're now bringing a whole world of hurt on the opposing offenses within the league.
Titans' starting quarterback Kerry Collins delivers a pass during the game against the Green Bay Packers. Collins has quietly and efficiently led the team without the furore that one wouldn't expect of an unbeaten team. picture appears courtesy of ap/photo/John Russell ............
What also has been surprising about the play of the team is the very fact that with the introduction of a mixture of youth and veteran presence. The team has played with a great deal of cohesiveness and maturity. It's borne out by the leadership shown by veteran quarterback Kerry Collins. This was thought to be Vince Young's team as he was meant to be the franchise quarterback thought to be leading the team well into the future. But with his off the field antics and the indifference being shown by him as to his lack of propensity to wanting to be part of the team. One has to be asking what and if anything will be done to address the situation ? And for Vince Young questions will now be asked as to his preparedness in having in what it takes to be a successful player and leader of a franchise within the NFL. No one doubts his talents but it is his character and willingness to be held accountable that has come into question. He now sits on the bench watching the success that's being achieved by a team that he was meant to be leading.

For coach Jeff Fisher this has proven to be a coaching success thus far in the season . And should the team carry this momentum for another couple of wins at least. Then surely they will gain a playoff berth ? The division is now theirs for the taking, with the Indianapolis Colts seemingly injury riddled and the play of quarterback Peyton Manning said to be less than stellar. The Jacksonville Jaguars are underperforming with their inconsistent play. The Houston Texans are seemingly adrift in a tide of what can be best described as mediocrity. With the Colts being the Titans' closest rivals standing frour games adrift with a 4-4 record within the division. How best can one describe the team's play ? Tennessee has done all that has been asked of it by their coach and if anything they've exceeded Fisher's wildest dreams. The lingering doubts and questions remain to be answered as to how they'd fare against the might of the NFC and within their own conference.

With a game coming up against Chicago Bears which'll severely test the resolve of this Titians' team. We will see whether or not they possess what it takes to show that they're now amongst the elite of the NFL. If that question can be answered resoundly then it will bode well for the team over the course of the regular season. They've shown in the areas that really matter when it comes to the game. They're good enough to acquit themselves well and have played at a high tempo as and when needed. The stats bare this out for the team as a whole. They're not afraid to stand toe to toe with the best of the teams and at the same time there is a belief that there is now a quiet confidence in this team as they go about doing what they do best. They're not overly flashy they just do the things that need to be done very efficiently without much fuss.

It's certainly far too early of such talk as to another unbeaten regular season by this team. The regular season has its merits but it's the postseason where the glory is to be attained. And at the start of each season there are 32 teams that enter the fray with the hope of raising the Lombardi Trophy. The fact of the matter is that there can only be one team left standing at the end of the day. Their hopes and ambitions start with the very first game but the finality of it all isn't lost on a team when they fall short of meeting their goals. For this Titans' team they're prepared to make the ultimate sarifice and lay down their lives in order to achieve that goal. The chances are that we may well see them succeed but then again they might not. At this juncture who can really say ?

Well with the undeniable problems that the Dallas Cowboys have been having . One would've thought that the test of a game against an all too willing an opponent would the appropriate test for the team. Well this Sunday the much vaunted Cowboys will take on a resurgent Tampa Bay Buccaneers' team all too willing to meet whatever faces them at this juncture. And with the neverending saga that is known as the Dallas Cowboys. One tends to wonder what'll indeed happen next ?

So much has happened to this team within the last few weeks that much of it has played out like an episode from a tv soap opera. The suspension of Adam Pacman Jones notwithstanding. The team has now lost Pro Bowl quarterback Tony Romo to an unforeseen injury. So much so that Cowboys' owner Jerry Jones must now be fretting as to what else can happen next to his team that hasn't been scripted to his desire. There's a sense of urgency and at the same time it must be said that much of team's travails was of its own making . The acquiring of Adam Jones has been a complete misnoma. It certainly hasn't helped either that we're now seeing the concerns of Cowboys' wideout Terrell Owens being voiced as to his not being part of the team's offensive play and productivity.

For the Buccaneers this team seems to be playing with a zeal that wasn't expected. As the feeling was that the Buccaneers as champions of the NFC South this season would be one of playing catchup to the likes of the New Orleans Saints. But at present it'd appear that the Saints have more problems than even their most ardent fans could've envisaged. Jon Gruden as coach of the of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers has his team playing with their usual stout defensive integrity . They've shown the league that they're more than able to handle even the most talented of teams. Their performance if anything has been more workmanlike in its efficiency than proficient in its manner.

Dallas for its part has been anything but stellar having lost three of its last four games and now stand at 4-3 on the season. Within the NFC South where the thought that they'd be the presumptive favorite within the division. They've been anything but that on the field. So much so that there's now the common belief that the team is now laden with problems. Many of which were of its own making and never mind the fact that Jerry Jones himself in many people's eyes were of the belief that he's been very much the orchestrator of the team's woes. Rather than let his coaching staff carry out their duties , it has been his interference and unwillingness to listen that has been cause for much of the team's malaise.

A win for the Buccaneers (5-2) at this juncture would certainly provide the franchise with the momentum they'd need as we reach the halfway point of the season. It'd certainly give their fans something to cheer about. And with the fans of the Tampa Bay area at present certainly enamored with the sporting exploits of the Tampa Bay Rays and their ascent to the top of the baseaball world. It can be said that the sporting landscape of the area is having its fill of sporting euphoria. The aspirations of both franchises can't be in question at the moment. With Raymond James being home to Superbowl XLIII , it could be said that Gruden's team would like to be there for a second bite of the apple having won a Superbowl in 2003. That win enforced the belief that the best was yet to come for Gruden and the franchise. But in reality it's been one of missed chances and a great deal of inconsistency shown by the team. This year it's hoped that they can prove their worth and play with even greater aplomb than shown last year. Having made the playoffs they were quickly dispatched by the New York Giants all too quickly. And with the Giants ending up the eventual winners of the Superbowl. It can't have sat well with the members of the Buccaneers as a team.

For the Dallas Cowboys a loss at this juncture would certainly do more to deflate the spirits of the franchise. They've already matched their loss total of last year having gone 13-3 last season . At 4-3 this season and seated third within their division (1-1) and (2-3) within their conference. To say that their season has been a disappointment would certainly be an understatement. The off the field controversies if anything has been just as thought provoking as have their woes on the field. And with Jones seeing fit to acquire often troubled wide receiver Roy Williams from the Detroit Lions. It begs the question what on earth has Jones got planned next for this team ? Wade Phillips' position as coach we've been assured is safe at present. But the patience of Jerry Jones has got to wearing thin. And less we forget so too is that of their often outspoken wide receiver Terrell Owen. Much now will lay in the hands of backup quarterback Brad Johnson as he takes over the reins for the injured Tony Romo. And with Johnson being not quite as adept as running the offense as Romo. We could well see the team labor under the weight of expectation in acquiting themselves well against the Buccaneers this Sunday. Tampa Bay no doubt like a shark hovering around its prey can smell blood in the water.

The Buccaneers themselves know that a win on Sunday will go a long way in cementing their credibility and legitimacy as a contender within the NFC. Tied alongside the Carolina Panthers within the NFC South. The team has the swagger about them that could go a long way in maintaining the momentum and consistency that coach Jon Gruden seeks from his team. As alluded to before this would bode well for the team and their postseason ambitions. A playoff berth isn't beyond them if they can maintain their composure and play with a lot more consistency. But as the season progresses one can never tell what's around the corner for most teams.

Dallas for all of the hoopla surrounding the team has been somewhat of an enigma. So much was expected of the team. But with all of the off the field improprieties and the seemingly neverending saga malaprops by the team on the field. It's hard to understand what else can happen to this team that won't in effect appear to be a comedy of errors. At 4-3 within their division and 1-1 within the highly contested division. They sit third within NFC East and 2-3 inside the conference. When one considers that the Cowboys didn't lose their third game last season until late into the season. You can now understand the urgency behind Wade Phillips' team and the fact that they've everything to play for. A loss at this stage of the season and one could start to write the orbituaries as to how you could envisage their season ending. There's so much uncertainty surrounding the team at present and with there being an apparent lack of leadership both and off the field. It's easy to understand why Jerry Jones' patience is now being severely tested. Wade Phillips' position as the coach is said to be not in danger at present. But who can say at this juncture ?

Tampa would prevail in an easy attained victory over the woefully inept Seahawks winning the game emphatically 20-10. picture appears courtesy of ap/Reinhold Matay ..............
With the Buccaneers looking to make a statement and perhaps knowing that the Cowboys are extremely vulnerable. A win over of any sort over the Cowboys would bring the Jon Gruden's team closer to their goal. An impressive display and one could take them as a legitimate contender within the conference and perhaps a well meaning aspirant for postseason ambitions. The defense has been as stout as ever and they're to be admired for the consistency shown over the last decade. Monte Kiffin as the team's defensive coordinator has exemplified the esteem to which he and his schemes are held. Clearly were he lost to the team it'd be hard to see how the Buccaneers would survive. He's proven to be the constant that the franchise has needed while Gruden set about to revamp the team with youth and exuberance on both sides of the ball. And though there's the feeling that they too at times have underperformed. The continuity has always been that of the Buccaneers' defense and its resoluteness. On the offensive side of the ball the Buccaneers have at times excelled but it's not often that they've maintained that high level of expectation with their presence when showing their prowess upfield. The playmakers in the guise of Bryant , Clayton, Hilliard and Graham could never thought of being game breakers. But they fit in adequately with the schemes of Jon Gruden.

So as Sunday approaches it'll be very interesting to see what the Cowboys will serve up for their fans. It must be understood that they're expecting a great deal from this team and how they acquit themselves will go a long way in suggesting what the remainder of the season will have in store for them. As alluded to before a loss and we'll be wondering what next Wade Phillips and his coaching staff will want to do to further draw the ire of Jerry Jones. And for Jones himself he may well want to rethink his strategy of being that ever present intrusion within the confines of Texas Stadium and in particular the onfield activities of his team. Forever the consummate businessman and showman , his antics now if any are said to wearing thin on his players , coaches and fans of the NFL alike. If nothing this soap opera continues with unabated breath , much to the dismay of those who've got time to be watching. Never suspenseful or full of intrigue this show if anything has been one of an woefully inept script and a complete comedy of errors. There's no one within the franchise ready willing and able to stand up and be held accountable for their actions. And that if anything has been what has beset this team as it faces its staunchest test. And that's to stand up be counted in an hour of need !

Savor the game today, as it'll go a long way in telling us about the demeanor of the Dallas Cowboys at this juncture. For the Buccaneers all that it is being asked of them is that they just go out there and play. And play they will but what has yet to be determined will be the outcome of the game.

Tradition is tradition and this Thanksgiving we'll have to put up with the Detroit Lions entertaining us on this perhaps the most festive of all the national holidays. Now far be it for me to be overly so critical of the NFL . But it is my belief that if it's their intention of entertaining the fans . Then it oughtn't to be a game where we'll have the worst team in the record and performance wise, in the guise of the Detroit Lions facing the surprise team of the NFL this season , the Tennesse Titans.
Lions' quarterback Daunte Culpepper (11) dives over the goal line on his way to scoring a touchdown against the Carolina Panthers. The Lions would go on to lose the game 31-22 ensuing their tenth loss of the season. picture appears courtesy of ap/photo/ Rick Havner .........
Let it not be said that there haven't been teams that haven't been equally as inept on the field of play this season. We've seen the St Louis Rams, San Francisco 49 ers and Seattle Seahawks perform as if they were hindered. Hindered by what you may ask ? Well you'd be hard pressed to provide an answer. Be that as it may I'm now wondering where the word parity comes into this all ? On any given day any team can come and play and beat any team. Well would you consider the Detroit Lions in their present guise being able to defeat any of the other 31 teams in the NFL ? Be truthful with your answer pease !

Daunte Culpepper loses the ball as tries to convert the two point conversion. Culpepper returned to the game from his own self imposed retirement. Since his return the fortunes of the team hasn't changed one iota. picture appears courtesy of ap/photo / Chuck Burton ...........
Well here we have the 0-10 winless Lions sitting at the bottom of the NFC North. And so mediocre has been the play within the division. That in many respects it's becoming so apparently clear that the division itself may well be the worst division in football with the exception of the AFC West perhaps ? But then again there's not much that can be said for a team that has become a complete anathema to not just their own fans but fans of the NFL general. And for those of us who make it a family tradition to watch the game on Thanksgiving. Will you be making a change in your scheduling on that day ? The tradition being what it is , it's normally the Lions and Dallas Cowboys who usually grace us with their presence on the day playing their respective opponents. For the Cowboys they'll be playing the Seattle Seahawks, a team that it can be said has defied the expectations of their fans. At 2-8 their record has been one where we've seen team whose aspirations for the season has imploded . And it's imploded to the extent where when they're on the field watching them can be torture.
Panthers' running back Johnathan Stewart (28) evades Lions' defensive player Ikaika Alama-Francis (97) for a thirty yard gain. picture appears courtesy of ap/photo/ Rick Havner ............
And as troubling as the problems seem to be for the Lions. It's extremely difficult to see how they're going to be able to lift themselves out of this slump. There seems to be no respite for them at all. Coach Rod Marinelli for all of his coaching capabilities and as a strict disciplinarian . His demeanor and the sacrifices that he's asked of his players seem to be falling by the wayside. Marinelli at this juncture has to be on the proverbial hot seat. If the team's fortunes don't change over the ensuing weeks. Then it's conceivable that he will be fired by the Lions' heirarchy.

Lions' receiver Calvin Johnson makes a catch in the game against the Carolina Panthers played at Bank of America Stadium in Charlotte, North Carolina . picture appears courtesy of getty images/ Streeter Lecka .....................
In every facet of the game the team has been woefully inept. The only bright spot however may well be the play of wide receiver Calvin Johnson. Of the draft picks made by former GM Matt Millen. Johnson has been the only one to truly live up to those lofty expectations. But one man doesn't a team make as it has to be a concerted effort by all members on the team and not just a select few. The season thus far has proven to be one of highs and lows. More so lows rather than highs. And as the season progresses it appears that the team could be on to a winless season. That sort of mediocrity and ineptitude hasn't been witnessed as of yet within the NFL. And when one considers the travails of the Miami Dolphins last season , whereby they went 1-15 for the regular season. Their turnaround this season may well provide some hope for the Lions.

Lions' player Jason Hanson (4) celebrates with his teammates after making a 56 yd field goal against Carolina in an NFC conference game played at Bank of America Stadium in Charlotte, NC. The Panthers would go on to defeat Detroit 31-22. picture appears courtesy of getty images/Streeter Lecka ..................................
As alluded to before the Thanksgiving Day game may not provide the hope that the Lions seek. The Tennessee Titans are proving to be a team that can win in a number of ways. And their defense is proving to be wall that seems to be impenetratable. Jeavon Kearse , Kyle Vanden Bosch , Tony Brown and Albert Haynesworth have become the Four Horsemen of The Apocalypse bringing doom and gloom to offenses across the league thus far. Less we forget also there's Pro Bowler Keith Bulluck. And as stellar as their defense is, the offense has been just as keen its determination to prove that the team isn't a one trick pony totally reliant on its defensive prowess alone. In LenDale White and Chris Johnson they possess a pair of young running backs that are more than capable of grinding out the yards when needed. And in wide receivers Justin Gage and Brandon Jones another set of potent offensive weapons. To add with that also they've got the guile of that wily veteran tight end Alge Crumpler. This season the team has made a name for themselves and with Jeff Fisher their coach leading them from the sidelines and veteran quarterback Kerry Collins leading the signal calling on the field. It'd appear all bodes well for the Titans at this juncture.

Lions' coach Rod Marinelli voices his disapporoval at the referee's decision during the game against the Carolina Panthers. The Lions would go on to lose the game 31-22 and reamain the league's only winless team with their record being 0-10. picture appears courtesy of getty images/ Streeter Lecka .....................
The troubling effect for a team such as the Detroit Lions is that confidence seems to be missing from the team both on and off the field. There's no real resolve to get things turned around despite claims to the opposite being made by coach Rod Marinelli and his staff when addressing the local press and public alike. And it certainly hasn't helped with the less than adequate leadership and interest shown by the Ford family, the owners of the team. The lack of interest shown by them concerning the franchise borders on sheer ineptitude that their fans most definitely would find to be appalling. It has only been with the firing of former GM Matt Millen that it may finally caught on with them the gravity of the situation within the franchise and the organization as a whole. One could allude to the fact that the way that they've overseered the franchise has been very much akin to the way that they've ran the family business almost to the brink of collapsing and on the brink of bankruptcy.

Rudi Johnson (32) of the Detroit Lions is tackled by the Panthers' Ni'all Diggs (53) of the Carolina Panthers during the game played at Bank of America Stadium in Charlotte, NC. picture appears courtesy of getty images/ Streeter Lecka ........................
The fortunes of the franchise are indeed bleak on appearance and it may well be that there'll need to be a complete reorganizational and rebuilding effort from management on down. With certain players being discarded altogether. They can rebuild around the only real tangible assets that they possess in wide receiver Calvin Johnson and running back Kevin Smith on the offensive side of the ball. And most certainly they'll have to attain a coach who has the ability to coach but above all be able to communicate with the players. Marinelli while for the moment adequate, most clearly is not the answer at this juncture. He's tried and failed miserably and in asserting that he knows what the team's underlying problems are. Only adds to the illusion that he's still got a long way to go in solving those problems. If he's still unable to get across the point what he wants out of the team then what reasonable chance has he in attaining the success that he's striving for ?

Quarterback Daunte Culpepper of the Lions makes a pass to teammate wide receiver Calvin Johnson during the game against the Carolina Panthers. picture appears courtesy of getty images/ Streeter Lecka ........................
They've struggled with showing some semblance of playing a competitive brand of football , let alone being able to entertain their fans. And with an upcoming game this Sunday against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers before facing the Tennessee Titans on Thanksgiving Day. The likelihood of them showing some change in the team's fortunes seems are remote at best if not impossible. It has to be said however that the chances of them pulling of an upset with a win against both of these teams are unlikely. Both have been playing at a very high level and are unlikely to take this Lions' team lightly . Nor would they like to be viewed as the team who gave made the Lions the beneficiary of their first win of the season. They'd both like to keep their records in tact and their aspirations for a postseason berth in the playoffs a sure thing.

Running back Kevin Smith (34) of the Detroit Lions evades the attempted tackle by the Panthers' Ken Lucas (21) during the game. picture appears courtesy of getty images/ Streeter Lecka .......
So as the advent of the event is in the offing it'll be interesting to see the steps that'll be taken by the Detroit Lions as they try to resurrect their season. There's some empathy towards this team but there's also a great deal of indifference as well. And much of that has been predicated on the mere fact that at no time has their ownership shown the keen interest in the fate of the team , that's not until they became the subject of ridicule from not only their own fans but fans in general of the NFL as a whole !

Somewhere along the way Plaxico Burress of the New York Giants seems to have forgotten that you're not only judged judged by what you do on the field. But you're also judged by what you do off it. So it should come as no surprise as to the latest incident concerning the New York Giants' wide receiver. Burress inexplicably suffered a self inflicted gunshoot wound whilst at a nightclub in New York along with best friend and teammate Antonio Pierce.

Coach Tom Coughlin and the Giants' ownership will have to take a serious look as to the player and his actions as of late. Since being acquired by the team from the Pittsburgh Steelers the player has been suspended multiple times by the team and fined in excess of $250,000. It begs the question what actions will be taken by NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell against Burress and his teammate Antonio Pierce. One has to remember that one of the charges that'll be brought against the player will be that the fact that he'd crossed state lines with unlicensed weapon. Pierce may well have assisted in getting his teammate to a hospital to supply medical assistance. But it is being widely reported that the weapon itself is no longer in the player's possession.

Dominique Rodgers-Cromartie of the Arizona Cardinals breaks up a pass intended for Giants wide receiver Plaxico Burress. picture appears courtesy of getty images/Thomas McKinnon ..................
Much of what Burress has achieved has come in the wake of his rise into the upper echelons of the NFL. And it cannot be heightened by the fact that Burress tends to march to the beat of his own drum. As loudly as it beats when it reverberates it does so with such ramifications that it becomes even more apparent the player himself cannot be excused for his juvenile behavior. What took place at a nightclub in New York lays open the actions of the player himself and what he mistakenly felt was appropriate for him to be armed and then to be granted entry to the club. Albeit that Burress has yet to be forthcoming as to his actions much less an apology to his club , teammates and the fans alike.

As to the NFL itself this is just yet another embarrassing episode that cannot be overlooked . From Burress to Matt Jones to Adam Pacman Jones the NFL game has become home to a bunch miscreants of the lowest of the low. And one would dare say that with each new episode we'll hear the usual set of excuses being made for a number of these players. If they're not prepared to be held accountable for their actions then they ought to be thrown out of the league altogether. Giving someone a second chance is all well and good. But what happens when they tend to repeat those actions and have no wish to held accountable ? Are we still to have them excused for those actions ? Surely not after an episode like this ?
Below as an added postcript with regard to this ongoing story please click on the highlighted and underlined text to view the latest happenings concerning this very troubling story and the lack of action by the NFL at this juncture.

Far be it for me to say but I think that we can all agree that the Oakland Raiders have had a mediocre season thus far. And last night's horrendous loss to the San Diego Chargers 34-7 certainly gives credence as to how far the team has fallen. With the upheaval that has taken place within the franchise again with them having to fire another coach in Laine Kiffin. Only to replace him with Tom Cable tells you all you need to know what has been going on and will continue to go on within the franchise. And until principal owner Al Davis relinquishes the reins to someone with more media savvy and player personnel knowledge when it comes to the franchise. Then the fans of the Raiders as well as the rest of the NFL will have to put up with a great deal of diatribe on and off the field for the foreseeable future.

For the league and in particular the AFC West where it can be best described as a shifting magma of ineptitude. So pitiful has been the division that the only thing that staves off criticism of the entrants therein. Is that the teams in the NFC West other than the Arizona Cardinals are playing a whole lot worse.

As to the fortunes of the Raiders'(3-10) opponents last night. The San Diego Chargers(5-8) they're faring only slightly better than their divisional counterparts. And to say that they might be the most disappointing team in the NFL this season would be an immense understatement. They were believed to be a playoff contender and most likely the AFC representative in the Superbowl. But with the loss of Shawn Merriman to injury. And the fact that Pro Bowl running back LaDanian Tomlinson has had an indifferent season as well as lingering injuries and quite possibly some self doubt. It hasn't gone well for coach Norv Turner's team despite the ladership on the field of quarterback Phillip Rivers. There'll have to be divine intervention if the Chargers are to make the playoffs. And at this juncture that is unlikely to happen at all.
Dareen Sproles of the San Diego Chargers flips the ball having scored a touchdown on an 18 yd reception tossed by quarterback Phillip Rivers. picture appears courtesy of ap/photo/ Lenny Ignelzi ..............
Last night's game however gives the Chargers something to look forward to if they're able feed off this victory. With a playoff spot seemingly oput of the reckoning , all they're now playing for pride and slef respect. They ran roughshod over the Raiders' defense and manhandled their offense with such meticulous efficiency. That it reminded everyone as to how good this team can be , albeit that they were playing against Oakland. Who more often than not nowadays mounts a challenge to an NFL team as about as frequently as Halley's Comet makes an appearance.
Vincent Jackson of the Chargers catches a 59 reception for a touchdown as fans react to the score. picture appears courtesy of ap/Denis Poroy .......................
The NFL world has prognosed and diagnosed the woes of the Raiders. And we all know what ails the team. It has been their inability to play with any semblance of consistency and the added fact that despite the alleged talents of quarterback JaMarcus Russell. Of whom it can be said he's still quite a ways away from being the finished product that's desired in an NFL quarterback. He's meant to be the face of the franchise along with running back Darren McFadden. But it appears that it's McFadden who'll have to be the workhorse as well as the on the field leader of the franchise. For if nothing else Russell's attributes as a player and leader are coming into question. A lot has been placed upon his large frame and thus far he's been unable to meet and live up to those expectations. And unfortunately when his backup Andrew Walter is unable to fare any better. It shows us all how dire the situation is for this team offensively.
Andrew Walter of the Raiders is about to be tackled by the Chargers' Shaun Phillips for loss of yardage in the game played against their divisional rivals. picture appears courtesy of ap/ Lenny Ignlezi ............
But it's also on the other side of the ball where the team has also been woefully inept. And opponents of the Raiders have been able to feast upon a defense that's as porous as a wet sponge. Not only are they susceptible to giving up large chucks of yardage in the passing game but defensively when it comes to stopping the run they're as equally adept at making their opponents look like world beaters. As can be borne out by the team's statistics.

Linebacker Derrick Burgess (56) cernter stands on the sidelines along with teammates William Joseph(96) and Gerard Warren(61) as the clock winds down during the game. picture appears courtesy of getty images/Harry How ....................
And if the Raiders' record of 3-10 isn't reflective of them being a bad team. Then even their most loyal and devoted fans who keep on returning each year in the silver and black have got to be disappointed with the frequency with which they're able to maintain this unsurpassed legacy of mediocrity for the franchise. There was a time when watching and supporting the Oakland Raiders was meant to be fun. And no doubt for many of their most trusting and loyal fans it probably still is. But one now can't help but wonder if quite possibly a number of them are now becoming neurotic and psychotic by what is being displayed by a team that they'd come to love. As voiciferous as they are there've got be times where a vast number of them have got to question whether or not it's still viable to continue supporting the the team. Consider this they've not posted a winning regular season record in five years and are about to embark on another this year, making it a sixth consecutive season of double digit losses. That if nothing else tells how far this team has fallen from grace since their last Superbowl appearance in 2003 which ended in a lopsided 48-21 loss to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

Raiders' quarterback JeMarcus Russell is taken from the field on a motorized cart having suffered an injury during the game played against the Chargers at Qualcomm Stadium in San Diego, Ca,. picture appears courtesy of getty images/ Harry How ........................
Though I'm not shuddering to think that the Raiders will continue with this sheer ineptitude as to their play and their off the field predicament. It doesn't augur well for the fans of the game let alone the franchise. By yesterday's evidence alone in the humiliating loss to the San Diego the road less traveled by the Raiders has been one filled with potholes and various other obstacles some of their own making and others which aren't. But it doesn't get away from the fact that when they look bad it continues to tarnish the legacy of a once proud franchise. And that's something that they're now learning to live with.

Make no bones about it the divisional playoffs now upcoming within the NFL is more about the fate of the teams than one can really imagine. We've seen the rise of the Philadelphia Eagles who were left for dead by many. We'd seen the demise of the Dallas Cowboys long seen as the presumptive favorites to win it all.

For the Cowboys however their season ended rather abruptly with a thud as they succumbed to a rather embarrassing loss to their divisional rivals the Philadelphia Eagles 44-6 at season's end. And now the Eagles will face the reigning Superbowl champions the New York Giants . In what it is sure to be a game played with a great deal of enthusiasm and passion. Both teams have been playing at a high standard and it's hard to say who'll come put on top. Both are equally voracious in attitude when it comes to defense. But if anything the Giants may well have the edge when it comes to the offensive capabilities. Albeit that as of late the Eagles with the play of their veteran quarterback Donovan McNabb and their wily running back Brian Westbrook have shown that they're back to their old selves and are equally as dangerous as anything that the Giants have to offer.

Well with this upcoming game and their reputations on the line as well as berth in the conference championship. This game offers up a great deal for the fans of both teams as well as the viewing audience. The New York Giants under the guidance of Eli Manning will be looking to successfully defend the Lombardi Trophy and at the same time become first team to successfully defend the title since the New England Patriots. And as we all know the Patriots' unbeaten season ended at the hands of the Giants in Superbowl XLII last season. Of which no doubt tears are still being spilt over that bitter loss at the hands of the New Yorkers by way of New Jersey.

While I've no horse to ride in this particular matchup it is one of the games that I for one am really looking forward to. As to the other games they're all intriguing in their own particular way. If there's one thing however that I'm pleased with thus far in terms of the games played. It's the mere fact that they've all been entertaining and played with a great deal of sportsmanship and without any officiating controversy. That's not to say that this won't happen as the postseason continues to unfold.

Andy Reid and his counterpart Tom Coughlin are two coaches with the credentials and acclaim that's widely acknowledged as being amongst the best that the game has to offer. Though earlier in the season Eagles' fans were all but decrying Reid and McNabb as being complete idiots. Things have changed to such an extent that they may well be thought of as being deities within the city of Philadelphia. And off course we all know how fickle the fans in the city of Philadelphia can be about their professional sport's franchises. If they can boo Mike Schmidt , Santa Claus, then why not the likes of McNabb or Reid ? Such are the machinations of the fans in Philadelphia.
I'll preface this by saying that once this game starts I'll be glued to my television set watching with baited breathe as things unfold over the course of the game. Chances are that the game may well be too close to call and as I don't consider myself a prognosticator just an ardent sport's fan. I'll just watch with glee and hope that the game itself will be thoroughly entertaining. Not just for the sake of the fan but for the sake of the game itself. At this juncture we want the game to filled with excitement and intrigue if nothing else. What are your thoughts on the game ?
